MEDREK or the End of a Political Masquerade?

It is now abundantly clear that the project of creating a strong multiparty opposition by uniting unitary parties and ethnic parties is anything but feasible. The inability of MEDREK to achieve unity despite numerous attempts as well as Dr. Negaso Gidada’s––who stepped down from the chairmanship of the strongest unitary party, namely, UDJ––recent convoluted declaration in which he said, “I oppose secession but support the right to secession,” seal the definitive collapse of the project. The sticking point, if one can decipher it in the maze of attacks and counterattacks, is the irreconcilable position of ethnic and unitary parties on the right to self-determination up to secession of the various ethnic groups composing Ethiopia. Another sticking point deriving from the right to self-determination is that parties have no right to campaign for political support or vote in regions that they do not represent ethnically. While the right to self-determination up to secession keeps Ethiopian unity in life support, the implication that regions are reserved for ethnic politics only does no more than remove the very purpose of unitary parties. Under these conditions, it is no surprise if the project of unity could not but fail completely.
I was among the many Ethiopians who hailed the formation of MEDREK as a new and very promising beginning reconciling the imperative need for national unity with the legitimate demands for ethnic recognition and equality. What the inability to achieve unity clearly demonstrates is the persistent prevalence of ethnic nationalism over the demand for equality. Sadly, ethnic parties in Ethiopia seem to be stuck in the Stalinist dogma of self-determination up to secession as the only path to achieving equality. It never crosses their mind that there are more than one ways of rectifying past injustices without jeopardizing the unity of the country. The reason for this predilection for self-determination is not so much the commitment to democracy as the pursuit of narrow elitist interests.
No sooner did I come to this conclusion than it dawned on me that the ethnic parties are actually no different from the EPRDF. They share the same premises ideologically and politically, the only difference being that they are not part of the ruling elites. Not only these so-called opposition parties have no alternative politics to the EPRDF, but they also view the ethnic partition of Ethiopia as the formation of legitimate reserved territories for ethnicized elites. Accordingly, their aspiration is to accede to the ethnic power system by preventing unitary elites from competing. In thus defending the ascriptive right to the status of being the sole representatives of their ethnic groups, they are but saying that the groups are not Ethiopian and that they must not have the choice between alternative proposals on Ethiopian unity and ethnic diversity. People are essentially defined by their ethnic belonging: they form homogeneous and exclusive groups and, as such, have no individuality and rights transcending the groups to which they belong.
Both the defense of reserved ethnic territories and the refusal to compete in a non-ethnic field testify that ethnic opposition parties are committed to a version of politics that is utterly undemocratic and ascriptive. It is hardly consistent to speak of democracy and exclude people from competing on the basis of ethnic belonging. Our spontaneous belief is that individuals become politically active and create political parties to correct injustice and defend freedom. In reality, what Ethiopia’s modern history has invariably staged is the struggle of disgruntled elites for the control of power in the name of the working people or ethnic groups. That is why the political system they generate, when some of them succeed in prevailing, is invariably undemocratic. It is never about empowering the people; it is about seizing power in their name so as to advance sectarian interests.
The inevitable conclusion is that unitary parties must no longer waste their time, energy, and credibility in trying to form an inclusive party with ethnicized elites. My suspicion is that ethnic parties brandish unification with unitary parties just for the sake of gaining time to firmly plant the seeds of ethnonationalism in their respective regions by providing it with the aura of opposition to a failing government. Unless ethnic parties officially and without ambiguity drop the right to self-determination up to secession, they are no more no less than the Trojan horses of the EPRDF deceptively disguised as opposition parties. Instead of courting them into unification, unitary parties must focus on the task of gathering and organizing national forces and presenting their own alternative policy and vision. In addition to recognizing the equality of all ethnic and religious groups, the policy must lay out the conditions for its effective realization in harmony with the unconditional unity of Ethiopia. Where ethnic parties advocate division and exclusive enclaves, unitary parties must promote unity and equality through the democratic empowerment of the people. The motto must be: democratic unity versus sectarian politics.

  1. If you do not respect the right of people, you will see the fake unity disperse in thin air. At the end of the day the people win not few elites who rap themselves in unity as means of re-instating the assimilation project .

    • We can not hope to suggest a solution for our today’s situation with the mentality of the three decades ago. This Prof lives very much in the past which is quite unfortunated to come from a learned man like him. If we can not try to reconcile our thoughts with the facts on the ground and come up with an attractive proposal that unites people we end up dividing the people which is a counterproductive.
So Prof please try to see what you are talking about before you make any attempt. I see your approach dividing us more than any thing.

    • The option for secession can be and must be put to rest thru reform which should include. 1) accept Oromo languge with Qubee to national level
      2) reconsider the bantutan killil for a genuine federal system
      3) come up with a resource sharing formula
      4) Introduce Somli and Tigrigna language from junior secondary schools and make one language other than their mother tongue mandatory for students to qualify for higher education.
      5) out law tribal parties and make the country a parlamertary democracy.
      6) find a way of promoting other languages and cultures to preserve the all from extinction.
Anything less than these will leave us barking at each other for ever like mindless animals.

      • We southerns are 21million people i don’t know why you oromos keep forgetting that, we are the heart of ethiopian economy, yet you keep druming about tigray and somalia? I must admit somalias have gas, we on the other hand will soon be the backbone of the economy with the discovery of oil!! we will lead ethiopia for the next Century under the banner of unity. There is a reason why we kept amharic as a offical working language in the South. we are proud 56 ethnic but more importantly we are one!!

        • Southern,
The Oromo did not and will not forget the southern people. We know that our destiny is the same as our suffering is altogether. My question is that, if you are pride of your self and one why you did not chose one of your own language to learn and work with instead of choosing the language you were forced to learn? For me it is luck of self-confidence.

      • Hi Gadaa (Oromo ultra-nationalists),
Why are you looking back? Do think the Oromo alone is contributing for Ethiopia? I hope you know that coffee, which brings the lions share of foreign currency, is mostly exported from Southern Peoples State. What different treatment do you Oromo ultra-nationalists want from Ethiopia? Do you plan to exterminate the people surrounding you by your savage gadaa system that massacred millions of people in southwestern Ethiopia? Of course, you Oromo ultr-nationalists abd chauvinists are killing innocent Sidama, Kore, Burji, Yem, Sheka, Wolayta, Kafa, Hadiya, Alaba, Kambata, etc. Is your the ultimatum you put above to aggressively wipe out non Oromo people from Ethiopia? Please come to your sense and think as humans, not as “mindless animals” as you rightly put it.
        Golbo

  2. Here is how I understand Negasso’s Position. ” I am not gay, or I don’t wanna be gay. However, I respect the right for others to be gay!” I believe that is how you, the good Dr, is living in America. Stop your double standard. This man is hated among his people (oromo) for not believing in secession and hence becoming an EPRDF rather than the OLF. How far else should he go to gain your approval sir? It is very sad when a “philosopher” can’t even wrap his head around this simple principle of democracy. Look at staunch nationalists/conservatives in your local ridding. They hate some liberal agendas. However, they respect the right for the liberals to hold those beliefs. Is this not a fact you yourself are living with? Why then you try to hold us to a different standard? Tatibo chika; adiro karia hone ye-habesha politica!

  3. Daily News Egypt profiling Mortada Mansour: ill-tempered, well known for his hot temper & was taken off air in TV phone interviews a number of times for using Obscene Language, the commander-in-chief of “the battle of camels” in Tahrir square,…
Who cares about this Mad man, the commander in chief for “the battle of Egyptian camels”.

  4. Let us be clear here. There are no multi- ethnic unitary parties in Ethiopia. Just because they attached some Adjectives to their names does not make them what they claim themselves to be. These are people who are trying day and night to undermine the struggle for freedom by oppressed people of the south.
People know what these groups stand for and they rejected it. It has been over twenty years since they made that abundantly clear. If any thing the Southern people are sad that the TPLF did not live up to the spirit of the agreement over two decades ago and that is true self rule without interference.

  5. Thank You for coming to the correct conclusion. Finally, you were able to see what we have been saying for many years!!
Now, If I may suggest to you Prof. Messay, the next article to should be, what are the unifying cause/issues that the Unity forces should bring up to tackle this repressive system from your prospective…

  6. Dr. Mesay Kebede is deadly wrong. There are no ‘unitary parties’. But, there are collections of few desperate and selfish neftegnas.

  7. There are no ‘unitary parties’. But, there are many collections of few desperate, selfish debteras.

  8. The whole article is dedicated to bring the Neftenya System back. Dr. Messay doesn’t care about the rights of nations and nationalities. All he cares is about the Amaras and their language. Our Afaan Oromoo and culture, for instance, are equally as important as oxygen. Without them, our physical, economic, social and spiritual existences come to an end. Life has no meaning without them. The efforts to confine rhe languages and cultures of others to a kitchen by Ethiopianists like Dr. Messay are doomed to fail. We will fight those who are still dreaming. No one can kill our spirit. The whole article is as stinky as the old Neftenya regimes.

From the out set, TPLF has been in control of Ethiopian State Power but for the sake of international compliance it continues to operate behind the façade of EPRDF. EPRDF is a coalition brought together by TPLF itself in order to clean its dirty laundry and to do the rest of its household tasks. Meaning TPLF created EPRDF on its own image to rigidly apply its rules of ethnic ideology against the will of Ethiopian people. Correspondingly, though it appears that TPLF may well have another medium like MEDREK to channel its ethnic ideology in cooperation with the old horse at hand. So in this case one would not expect anything diverse and wide-ranging political format from the same tribal chiefs whose inclinations have been and still are to stick together with their own kind by excluding other Ethiopians just because such Ethiopians are not part of their clan. And yet at the wake of waning and weakening EPRDF, part of the WOYANE’S leadership is in a rash to control the newly ethnic based coalition in order to reinforce and preserve its Tigrean hegemony intact in Addis. Basically, that is the reason behind the formation of this coalition appears to be since both Siye and Gebrue Asrat are in charge to run its every move ahead. What’s more, both of them are former TPLF leaders with vested interest of rearranging their ethnic federalism in order to rehash the same old song with no fundamental change attached to it. They may have quarrel with Meles but not with a closely organized system of TPLF’S ethnic ideology that formed the basis of WOYANE’S political philosophy to begin with.
First and foremost, racism is a road map to destroy humanity and as well it is a war on human race. It gives rise to an evil quality of human genius that tempts humans to become animal like monster. Racism knows no fear of God, no inner voice, no rational or logic that would give human tips and balances to equalize its sense of humanity in which human society is calm and able to make rational judgments. Racists treat humanity with disrespect. You must be one to find a friend and that is what Racists lack the most. Racism may be defined as the hatred of one person by anther based on his or her color of skin or ethnic background. Isn’t that what ethnic ideology is based on? So the mere idea that all ethnic based political groupings including TPLF have in common is nothing else but abhorrence they have to any races other than their own. That is the fact!
Besides, since such ethnic based organizations and elements involved in MEDREK are from the same socio-economic background, one would not expect them to be representatives of their ethnic groups either. Meaning they are incapable of representing any constituencies other than their own elite groups. By all accounts, they have what it takes to be part of the upper classes of their own respective regions and as well enjoy the resources and advantages associated with being rich and powerful. Besides, with the exception of some defectors here and there, all in so-called MEDREK happen to be tribal oriented and old-fashion racists. Racial discrimination would not be a legitimate case in point for narrow nationalists to win the hearts and minds of the ethnic group they claim to represent. We know it by heart that heaven and hell don’t mix. But in the minds of narrow nationalists everything in between is confused which is why they are destined to be lost souls.
Next, hate is a crime since it causes displeasure, anger and resentment to any other fellow country men and women. Most important of all, isn’t that what all racists have in common? The other agenda they have in common with TPLF is also that they have excessive devotion to their own narrow agenda of nation and nationality questions, often associated with a belief that their GOSSA is superior or inferior to one another especially to that of ethnic group called AMHARA. Isn’t that the very agenda they share with TPLF to begin with? A platform in which all ethnic based organizations including TPLF agree on to work together against the greater Ethiopian nationalism and also a plan of action adopted by those who oppose to Ethiopian Nation State and as well a set belief on which their platform is always based to challenge the very existence of Ethiopia and the moral and social fiber of her people for so long. unlike EPRP and other broadly based political organizations, those in MEDREK plus TPLF condemned not the systems we had in the past but AMHARAS as if all AMHARAS were in a position where all and sundry was under their control. To put it briefly, ethnically based and narrowly focused political groupings that carry out the same socio-political policy of TPLF could not be any better than TPLF itself. “The less justified a man is in claiming excellence for his own self, the more ready he is to claim all excellence for his nation, his religion, his race or his holy cause.” — Eric Hoffer
And then again, for the record, in the conference of 1991 held by TPLF, Professor Asrat was the only voice that avowed to Ethiopia ’s glory and stood tall against their verdict. And the only participant in that very conference who said no for TPLFS’ misleading proposal and advised others to disregard TPLFS’ political scandal. But on the other hand Professor Beyene Petros and others in newly defunct MEDREK accepted TPLFS’ scandal with full hearts and shining eyes. That is the fact! The notion once generated the illusion of change by penalizing AMHARAS and confusing ethnic AMHARA with the nationhood of Ethiopia as a whole was formulated none other than by Gebiru Asrat and Siye Abraha of today’s MEDREK and finally endorsed by the majority participants brought together by Siye and comrades themselves into to that conference room. Nothing is further from the truth! Isn’t that part of the dues they are yet to pay? Aren’t they the ones who failed us as a nation and tried to substitute Ethiopian Nation State with their parochial doctrine called KILLIL FEDERALISM? Anyone harboring the notion of tribal and ethnical strife to take root in Ethiopian soil must be condemned permanently.
Last but not least, public sentiment is everything, especially, when it comes to politics and public support at large. Obviously, none of them have a base of political support. Because of their disgraceful political positions they held against Ethiopian Nation State throughout their political careers. It is no wonder though that Ethiopians are outraged allover by the disgraceful actions and decisions TPLF has been making all along in order to dismantle their country. Isn’t that the reason why TPLF is suffering the direct consequence of their negligence of Ethiopian national grievances nowadays? “With public sentiment nothing can fail. Without it nothing can succeed” So can such alignment with such background fit to live in a state of such social equation?
Be that as it may, I believe we are at a time when the unity and the struggle of the two opposing positions come to face to face in a challenge and often with hostility, harsh criticism and defiance. The Unity Force VS Narrow Nationalists! So it is time on our part to have to use the diary of each individual involved in the so-called MEDREK against their political fate in Ethiopia . The official record of those in MEDREK has been and still is to reform and adopt the existing ethnocentric political mode of behavior and thereby to persuade Ethiopians as such and impose the same tyrannical system against the will of the people. Little we knew what fate has in store for MEDREK, still we can tell that this alignment will be fade away shortly. One would tell often on the basis of present indications and as well based on the background of hose elements involved in this alignment. Almost all of them are a public disgrace for the fact they were part of the leadership of TPLF and other disgraceful political organization under the previous dictatorial regime. As a result, such bad elements are incapable of rallying the public behind them ahead and shall remain to be a public disgrace forever.
Unlike Reformers and Reactionary elements in combined, the position of the union force including EPRP is nothing but to topple TPLF from power. MEDREK is for reform while the union force is to beat the system. When such reactionary factions as ARENA of Tigray join MINORS in Ethiopia in order to reorganize and reform The Tigrian Hegemony, one has to ask the following questions, one is that is it to reform the current ethnocentric political system that is considered to be faulty, ineffective and unjust or what? And yet, the two camps will continue to generate strong conflict not for political offices throughout the country, but for they have an opposing views toward Ethiopian unity and her territorial integrity. Both have indeed significant differences between them both in the characteristics of their members and platforms.
EPRP endured years of war and repression and yet it continues the struggle steadily despite hardship, difficulties and obstacles. EPRP vowed not to turn to the side or otherwise to alter the direction of the movement or not to lose the sight of its noble cause at all times. Obviously, though EPRP remains an all time potential rival of all forms of tyranny in our country and continues to be so until it makes sure that sweeping political, economic, and social changes take place in Ethiopia as opposed to that of the sporadic movements led by some fragmented quarters destined for. The reformers including ARENA of Siye desire nothing but to amend the existing ethnocentric system of government and keep the status quo alive. On the other hand, EPRP is not in favor of reforming the existing ethnocentric political system and joining the tyrant regime to share power in Addis Ababa . Though one may attempt to marginalize the role of the Union Forces in general and this brave PARTY in particular but in vain. After all, Reformers and Turn Coats are incapable of persuading the public to go on against the unity forces that includes EPRP and the cause we all are for. And also, one would question whether or not those Reactionary Forces opposing to that of our progressive social and political changes are capable of being enduring hardship ahead. The fact remained solid that they are not indeed as courageous, bold, and determined enough to face the reality as EPRP and affiliates are in the real sense. So at the end, they shall end up bedding with TPLF itself and shall be swept together with the system they built in.
After all, the notion of Ethiopian nationalism is much larger than singled out ethnic nationalisms in combined. Thus one would urge everyone on board to be as positive as one can be to attain our unity and fight on against vulcanization. And then again, move on to the next level in which our superior moral truth is dominant and prevailing winds against enemy’s position. Indeed, the superior moral truth we uphold helps us defend the truth and the principles of social justice in the face of enemy’s hostility. It also provides us with more of moral victory and inspires us with confidence and courage in our struggle that shall bring about the downfall of our last few rivals in power. If not right, Might is absolutely essential for us to survive my fellow Ethiopians. In all fairness, might is the answer for an upper hand: as lip service is for an empty technique of rhetoric. Be consistent with our national interest or take a hike with the outgoing ethnocentric dictatorial regime in Addis Ababa . Besides, might is ultimately needed to check and limit enemies power base at the appointed time. And yet again, the positive aspect of all this is that victory is inevitable so long as we are determined to keep on struggling in spite of obstacles. Eventually, the premises we stated to public shall begin to have some positive results which we will get better off then by making use of our strong hold on politics in a way civility is well served. In the aftermath, though we will find ourselves in a position where the vast majority of the people are awaiting in the wings to cast their vote to the union force given that friendship is the product of privileged circumstances and authentic victories and hardly ever any enemy thereafter.
Afterwards, creating an environment in which people are already persuaded to take side with our unity force is central in order for us to influence and dictate terms and conditions in our own favor on the ground. After all, our objectives are well taken which is crucial to survive and to fit in our political environment then to organize, train and supply the youth with weapons to fight against the fate of TPLF/EPRDF That also provides us with more of firepower and muscle to twist enemy’s hand and force TPLF to negotiate, if needed to do away with them, or to deal with them if required.
Besides, those political prostitutions that are messing and dancing around in a circle will also join us at our own pace. Those false prophets aside, however, the foremost duty of EPRP and all genuine Ethiopian political and civic organizations is to depose TPLF/EPRDF and replace its ethnocentric regime with a democratic system of government. Clearly, this is the central theme as is a dividing wall separated us from the MEDREK and other reformers. TPLF/ EPRDF together with those fortified collaborators that are relentlessly reinforcing its political muscle must be condemned permanently to the fire of hell
In conclusion, there is no such thing as that Amharas are chauvinists and Tigreans are narrow nationalists so on and so forth. Because I honestly believe that the majority of Amharas, Tigreans, and Orromos are decent (CHIWA_ Ethiopians with the exception of some human animals possessed with some evil qualities called prejudice. Consequently, what the mother of all winning children needs to see most is to see her well brought up children drawing together in an effort to rescue her from cannibalism. Virtually, only the chosen individuals of divergent views in Ethiopia can live in peace together with the rest of their links. Because they are certain that they do share certain common aspirations and hopes that are more important than their differences. Both chauvinists and narrow nationalists are the products of social prejudices. Both bark at anyone whom they do think are not part of their clans. They are obsessed with anger against any clan other than their own and are always the prisoners of their own unfortunate experiences. As a result, they both believe in retaliation. With that said, the only conceivable solution there is, is to create an environment in which we all Ethiopians can become effective, helpful participants in a way of life that blends and harmonizes the abrasives and the polite individuals together within one society called Ethiopians.
    Ethiopia shall prevail!!

  11. Dear Prof.
Instead of deciding what is good and what is bad for the country or different regions or people with different political views, why we cannot leave for the voters to decide. Unfortunately there is no single political view that include all. Let open the door to be organized whatever way the people want. The political parties that are organized based on region or ethnic group will get the votes they deserve. Same is true for the political parties that organized against ethnic political parties (`unity`). The party (parties) with majority votes will lead the country (the regions of the country) until they lose voters confidence. What I am against is deciding for the entire country sitting in my office.

  12. In any nation building or formation of a country inevitable authorities were committed by those were on power at the time on those were resisting. In many countries those who were resisting defeated and assimilated or reconciled for comment benefit or continue resisting in few corner of the world. In Ethiopia it is mixed filling due to that there is few of all other than reconciliation. We also note that denial and exaggeration of the past taking their spree in opposite directions which creating uncertainty in the country benefiting the regime on power instead of those benefiting the population that both ethnic based and unitary advocate parties are claim to represent.
After 23 years if we are not coming to our cense people of Ethiopia may take their fait into their hand. It may be chaotic, but what if there in no choise?
Quebec (Canada) provincial election result is a good learning example for those preaching separation without listening to the people they pretend to represent. The separatist party of province of Quebec (one of the province of Canada) Party Quebecois keeps preaching on separation and on controversial Quebec Charter of Values on election campaign without lasting to the people. Finally the people of Québec spoken by showing red card not only to the separatist party but also to the leader of the party by denying her their vote, Canada is where people put their will in practice, democracy. How many time people of Ethiopia shown red card to TPLF/EPDRF? Countless. No independent referee to take a note and to tall the looser, you’re the looser give way to the winner, tyranny doesn’t understand the language of loosing by ballet.
For those also preaching unity without diversity and respect of others have to woke up to the reality to build Ethiopia for all. Come up with clear and inclusive vision for all with honesty and humiliation. If not as I mentioned above we are making fertile environment for longevity of the power of tyranny in Ethiopia.
Allah the Almighty Bless Ethiopia and Its people

  13. Dear writer:
Are you calling UDJ, MEAHD and blue party unitry parties? It is really funny. All these parties excutive bodies are from the same ethinic group. How honor you call them unitry parties? Rather for me MEDRCK is more multi-party than the one you are calling if you want reality. Why do you think UDJ and MEAD failed to unit? becuse there is tribal difference between the two party, that is whether Godore (MEAD) or Shoa (UDJ) should take the presidential position? Is that not true?
Dear writer, MEDRK is moveing in the right direction. It is a multi-party organization having more than 2/3 of ethiopian people representation and can lead the country without need of coalition with any party. I hope other nation and nationalities will join this group to end domination of Northerns elit.
    MEDREK keep walking VIVA!!

  14. Ladies and gentlemen, Why Ethiopians are getting more and more ignorant, cowards, corrupted liars, enjoying life with their primer enemies. The land is occupied by the tplf/woyane who is enjoying maximum power whereas the the others struggle with their funcy political party and tribalism. Every one enjoys talking about his/her ethnic society.
As long as Ethiopians occupied with gossa policy fight against each other instead of the primary enemy the tplf. Indirectly all are serving the tplf, …….the question is when are we going to learn……………..

    • I have come to same conclusions for some time now. The supremacy of the individual is utterly incompatible with the idea of ethnic exclusivity. It might be permissible for minority groups to organize themselves according to some narrow ideas, but for entire sub groups to claim power based on single criteria is nothing but dictatorship. It is time to grow a backbone and shed these dead weights.

    • Warrabadii.
The struggle is against the system. Both are false choices. Both the TPLF and the so called” unity” side are fundamentally the same. Therefore we fight both. We do not have to pick a side and help another evil group come to power.

  15. This guy writes according to his whim and contingent emotions never in accord to reason as a philosopher is expected to do. In his last article, he was propagating
about the necessity of reconciliation; today he is virtually declaring war against
ethnic nationalists including the TPLF. It is his right to contradict and negate himself
as frequently as he wishes, but he should be ware its practical consequences.
It appears odten that he writes for the sake of writing perhaps for improving
his english, which he used to conspisciously lacking. At times, it also appears that
his sole purpose to please the mass abesha-diaspora but which he couldn’t so far, partly, for the obscurity of his ethnic identity and partly for his inconsistencies.
I think it is advisable at this juncture of his cadre career to be a bit thoughtful rather than just vomiting.

  16. Messay Kebede is mad, just because Amhara dominated party (UDJ) is dismissed from Medrek. Medrek doesn’t fail due to the dismissal of the few, selfish and desperate neo-netegna debteras.

  17. If Medrek is aspiring to become another EPRDF, then Professor Messay has a point. I know most ethnic parties are not struggling for democracy, justice and equality. But, they want not only to dominate their ethnic turf, but also have exclusivity right over the territory and alienate all that are different from them, i.e. minorities. This is basically the weyane system that we are fighting. To be fair, there may be few ethnic parties who are fighting for their group’s legitimate interest; I believe the unitary parties should screen those and work with them.
Frankly speaking, the current EPRDF/Weyane system is ethnic Feudalism, not Ethnic Federalism. They have even taken it many steps further, and have done a lot of ethnic cleaning and perpetual genocide. The west has been collaborating with Weyane in its ethnic cleansing and genocide agenda by financing such agendas and providing technical support and blind eyes. In a nut shell, Medrek should not aspire to replace weyane and perpetuate the system; that does not need a fight. Our struggle is to completely uproot the weyane system and replace it with a genuine democratic order that works for all Ethiopians.

  18. What is wrong with ethnic politic and referundum? Is nt that democracy? Ethnic federal isnt wprking in Canada? Art 39 is not tested many times in Quebck without succés? Mr Messay we should let the last word to the people. It is democracy.

  19. Was MEDREK an opposition party to EPRDF with alternative ideas ?
Nope ! Not at all !
Medrek was a sattelite or teletafi of EPRDF albeit with a little autonomy
than OPDO and ANDM. Its politics was always within the political sphere
    or spectrum of EPRDF.
It was simply occupying the absent chairs of some liberals and progrssives
of the ONLFand OLF absent opposition parties.
Medrek has never been an opposition but ONLF and OLF do.

  20. We don’t need to fight against regiona/ethnic parties and embrace on centralized and rigid unitary system. If we do, it will probably prolong the marriage of dominent EPRD and vassal regional political parties. We need either federalism, conferation or some sort of combinations systems to accomodate the regional and ethnic griviences. I think any genuine regional political party and federalist parties can co-exist at the national level given fair and open competetion in the ballot box in every region. Naturally many people will vote according to their personal or communrty interest, political platfoms, and their conscirence regardless . The outcome willl vary from election to the next as long as there is no violation of the will or the rights of the individuals.

    ብሃላይ መን’ዩ….?

  22. Medrek in order to be counted as opposition it should have
had rejected and boycotted EPRDF administartion of the past
two decades like OLF, ONLF and Others (true oppositions)
instead of being an accomplice and an ally of a different form
in the destruction of Ethiopia by the Tplf for last 20 + years.
    Note that :
I was not holding the state power doesn’t mean I was not part
    of the system.

  23. This website is infitrated by neftegnas and separationist OLF, it is clear that both of them are given red card even by the people they caiim to belong,i do know why they do not accept the current federal and inclusive system rather than barking behind the screen, please try to listen the proud people of ETHIOPIA not alone the people arround you. if you isten our people we will not accept neither blind unifiers nor blind separationist as time for both is over

  24. Usually need relates to holes in your underwear and socks.
However, specialty stores such as Lane Bryant offer
fashionable plus size denim jeans, skirts and tops.
In most cases, clothing photography requires
little editing other than cropping and some minor adjustments with contrast
    and brightness.
