Happy Birthday to Emperor Menelik!

By kuchiye
Born this very day August 17, 1844, Emperor Menelik II, was, by far the most enlightened leader, most astute politician and diplomat, most progressive of all previous generation of kings. He was the most judicious leader and trailblazer of Ethiopia’s modernization.
He started most everything that we know today; the first hospital, the first modern school, the first motor roads, the first rail system, the first telephone and postal system, the first modern ministerial cabinet, the first…. the list is staggering and very well documented.

You would want to ask, “How did this person of the people manage to achieve the re-unification of Ethiopia and requisite stability to launch a modernization effort that continues to this day?” I asked the same question and found the answer to be very simple and often overlooked.
Menelik proved to be a very astute student. During his stay in Gonder from age 10 to 20 as political prisoner of Emperor Tewodros (albeit treated with dignity), he learned in earnest that Tewodros’s mission to bring about the end of Zemene Mesafinit (the reign of princes) which fractured the country and dragged her through decades of civil war was of paramount importance. But he also learned Emperor Tewodros failed to garner the complete loyalty of subdued princes and regions because he used excessive force and failed to re-instate the defeated princes to their position of influence in exchange for loyalty. No sooner had the emperor and his expeditionary forces left the region, the little princes rebelled against the emperor forcing a costly second and third campaigns and which the country did not afford. “There has to be another way!” Menelik must have pondered.
He also learned from Emperor Yohannes’s folly – like Emperor Tewodros’s, it was more or less characterized by the same “stick-and-tick” approach to administration. Menelik knew that Yohannes’s overzealous commitment to protect and defend the orthodox faith and his intolerance to the followers of Islam brought about his demise. Menelik must have sworn never to repeat these mistakes.
Menelik’s reign was unlike his predecessors. It became very inclusive, tolerant and respectful of the cultural, religious and other values of the regions he re-instated into the Ethiopian nation. Once his adversaries pledge allegiance to his rule and to Ethiopia they were left to preside over their territory and people provided they observed the law of the land including the anti-slavery law.
Menelik’s victory at the battle of Adowa had earned him great respect and admiration both at home and abroad. His war arsenal was enriched by arms left behind of fleeing Italians. It was also the worst of time since locust and poor rain had depleted the grain stock of the country. On the other hand, he had to stop the northward incursion of England in the south and north-west of Ethiopia and the east and north-east incursion of France and Italy for the scramble for Africa had intensified. Despite the war fatigue and hunger, he had to launch campaigns to the south and east. He halted the British at Lake Rudolf and that is how we earned the present day southern boarder of Ethiopia. He also stopped the British, French and Italians in the east. Only a leader who is well loved and respected could have pulled a campaign right after a huge campaign that defeated and imperial power at Adowa. The British knew better and never dared challenge Menelik at Rudolph. This, my friends, is how we got what we now call Mother Ethiopia.
Many fictive stories have been told in attempts to label Menelik as a colonizer and as one who surrendered Eritrea to Italy. Nothing can bee further from the truth. Communists and liberation movements routinely create an enemy in order to rally support from the not-so-learned. It is a common propaganda tactic perfected by Goebel of Hitler fame. “Repeat untruth enough time and if you manage to at least create doubt in people’s mind, you have won the propaganda war”. I hate to say our “Liberation Fronts” are Goebel disciples.
Happy Birthday Emperor Menelik and thank you for all your efforts!

  1. yeneche baria endanehone ke egziabehayre erdata gar yetewagalen negus menelik
yebarenet shekim endakelelkelen aferune yakelelehe ADWA lie bedile yasgebahe geta bedile begenet yakoyehe!!!

  2. Menelik
This is the Menelik I perceive. Open minded, positive thinker, sincerely serving his people badly eager to see his people to be on the top. He is super. God bless you and Happy birthday Emperor Menelik. You are the best. High regard, esteem and respect for you for ever and ever.

  3. Emperor Menelik was one of the greatest leader who inspired a lot of Ethiopians Unlike Meles who stole 3 Billion from poor Ethiopians,. Melike was a very smart and honest leader.I I wish he had stayed long enough to help his people.

  4. Hi Zehabesha editors and producers(owners). It is great that you are updating us on the birth date of the late great man whom I often like to call as the barefooted king. For I doubt that the man has ever worn any smart shoes at that time and age.
But the most unfortunate thing that you the scions of the great man are far from great or rather you often appear to be medicores who like to think with the same mentality of the late man which is leading you and your people to doom unless you reconsider your approach to Ethiopian politics.
If not you are going to be a sandiwtch between fires from all corners in that country. as our country disentigtigrates while we helplesly watch primerly because of your catastrophic stabornness to learn from what is unfolding infront of your eyes over the last 20 years.
Take your lesson and help save your people and our country in general. And for this I only refer you an artic;le in Ethiomedia.com titled Response to Yusuf Yasin (Bito).
If our country is to be saved the Amhara elites shou;ld start to thing as this great man wrote no more no less or else forget about Ethiopia as a nation and bress yourself for the worset that is going to happen to your people only because you can not let go of Mnliks mentality that can only lead you to your doom for what has worked Minlik yesterday can not work for you today.
Think hard in the interest of your people and yourself.
Best wishes for our people and country.

  5. The victory at Adwa over fascist Italy changed world history.
Menelik inspired all the black people of the world to rise up against colonialism and gain their freedom.

To the Minority Amharas Menilike is a hero, to the Ethiopias majority Oromos Menilike is known for being oppressor and killer. Invading and Stealing oromos land to reward the stolen oromos land the Amhara tribe. Menilike also sold strategic lands ports, included Dejibuti to France, Somalia to Brits and Italy and Eritrea to Italy.

  7. Imimye Menilik is my beloved hero for all times; the victor of the famous Battle of Adwa which became the beacon of hope for all black people in the Diaspora struggling for freedom. The beloved Monarch was supremely intelligent, military genius, magnanimous, incorruptible – to mention but a few among His impeccable leadership qualities.
    Thank you Kuchiye

  8. Menilike did not only mass genocided oromos, he even blackmailed Tigreans by dividing tigrigna speaking people by selling part of Tigre today known as Eritrea to Italians in secret order to divide and weaken the political challenge of the north. As far as truth goes the true king of Ethiopians were King Yohanse and King Tewdros.

  9. Don’t get mad if the TPLF celebrated Melese Zenawi birth day because Melese Zenawi killed only 45,000 oromo people while your ugly Menilik killed 5 million. The evil Ethiopia lives with the blood of my people and I will make sure that it is destroyed for once and forever.

    • DUR
meniilik killed 5 million oromo is fiction
melese killed 45,000 oromo is fiction
when you want to publish your fiction book ? you are good like Hollywood

    • @ dur But, Menilik did not rob 3 billion from ethiopian people unlike Meles. You have inferioty complex. Menelik the greatest leader of African Nation.Mayab,
your IO is so low to understand.

  10. happy birth day minilike.but does evey body know menilike brought electricity with the intention of to kill people instead of development he used to hung people eveywere he leaves the died body 3.4 days hunged so this eurpean guy shoked when he saw the horrable punishemnt ,then he asked minilike why he do like this .minlike replayed you know i enjoye hunging people and watch there died body evey day if you have a better method to kill people i will be welcome.so in this case this european guy brought an idea to use electric chair.he brought 3 for minilik after arrival eventually there is no electric power to run the electirc chairs. so minlik end up using one of the chairs as throne he still stitting on it in the hell they always shoke him they never kill him

  11. I’m proud ” emiye” menelik. If he hadn’t fought & prevailed over fascist, we would have lost all our identities ( language, alphabet, culture and so on). So let’s celeberate his birthday every year. What has been said against him is all baloney & white lie fabricated by EPDRF & OLF.

    I quote—-
“…… No I do not hate Amharas, I just disapprove of Amhara’s outdated 16th century backward mentality”.

  13. Minelik the first king in our history who had shaped to a new Ethiopia and to join with rest of the world .he also the first hero commander of wise man who defeated Italian invasions. by uniting the people.

  14. I feel sorry for these blind and illiterate OLF supporters. they remind me of the sheep in the book “Animal Farm”. They are told to memorize fabricated slogans and memorize them at every turn and corner. They are shown pictures and told ” these is what you are supposed to hate” and they will start to hate immediately. With no capacity to question let analyze issues they are sorry targets of a few power hungry souls . The Oromo migration to the north has devastated land, disrupted life and killed unaccounted number of indigenous people than any in Ethiopia’s history. Menelik treated southern states and tribal leaders with respect. He even put many of them in the highest of offices and in full embrace. Which colonizer ever did that if you call Menelik a colonizerr? Grow up!

  15. In order to talk about history you must actually know and understand history.
yo all talking crap about how Menelik destroyed Oromiffa & made you speak Amharic and shit, if it was not for him you may not even know a language called Oromiffa & would have been talking 3 different languages like English, french & Italian
he is the one who preserved Oromia, he is the only one in the history of Oromos who actually united the Oromo.
if it wasn’t for him Oromos would not even be talking about being the majority, i don’t see the Oromo’s in Kenya, Somalia and other African countries talking about being majority with Pride.
And for the record Menelik didn’t force the Oromos to speak Amharic, in fact he is the only one who who let the people he conquered keep their language, culture & religion, I’m not just drippin it is fact, read history the real one, Oromos like Abajifar were loyal to him and they fought beside him, and some of them even died for him, i don’t know who gave you a history lesson but it is bull shit, it is yo millennial’s who don’t know shit about history that hate Menelik, you talk about him being an oppressor, forgetting that he is a king, you think the rest got a better treatment even those under king Abajifar, you said he kills oromos in wars, really that is the very definition of a war, if you happen to forgot the meaning, you call some random numbers like 5 million! for real if he had killed that much Oromos back then yo all would have been extinct!!!
Of course he he have killed Oromos in a war, and the Oromos on the other side also killed Menelik’s soldiers which were mostly Oromos, Amharas, and other people from other parts of the country. why don’t you talk about that, don’t make it look like an ethnic war, yo all know that is far from the truth. you know he also killed amharas & other people too if that makes you feel any better, why the heck would you make it personal it was just business!!! Every body was killing everybody back then, if he hadn’t done it some one else would have and in a worse way. remember it was the 19th century, read around & try to Guess what would have happened to Oromia if it was not conquered by Menelik, The only reason you still have an Oromo Pride left in you is because of Menelik, thank him for that.
the other thing you must understand is he is a 19th century KING what do you expect, a democracy, really try to be in his shoes, how do you expect him to expand his territories? through referendum 🙂 (don’t talk shit about expanding territories& invasion, because if you play that card there is no one to be criticized more than the Oromos whose day to day job was to invade other people & expand other territories) what ever crime you accuse Menelik Oromos are more guilty, a hundredth fold.. literally, don’t get me started on that
so talking shit about the past you actually know nothing of(or just some of it) will bring you nothing, let us leave the past in the past and focus in the future, talking of the wrong doings & holding grudges will not amend it, you will always carry it with you & it will hurt you more than any one else, you will be slaves of the past, free your self from the burden of past and there is only one way and it is called forgiveness, if you think that is too much then you are a looser who will never accomplish any thing of great significance in his life. Just sayin and thanks for patiently reading this very long post.
if you guys like watching movie i would like to invite you jetli’s movie called – Hero
    Happy New Year!!!
