Ethnic Politics and the Addis Ababa Master Plan !!!

Tedla Asfaw

Tedla Asfaw
Tedla Asfaw

Ethiopian students of our generation are known for being politically very active. We grew up chanting “Land to the Tiller,Merete LeArashu”. Many died for that cause and it seems this generation of Ethiopians known  fighting among ethnic lines in colleges and universities came up with their slogan of keeping lands that “belong” to them to remain with them. They exchanged Land to the Tiller for ” Land to My Tribe ” !!!

The Ambo University students on April 25, 2014 were heard  chanting slogans, “Burayu is not for sale”, “Sululta is not for sale”, “Legetafo is not for sale”. “Oromia  for Oromos”. They also cry Finfine/Addis Ababa is Oromia.
They claim that the new Master plan for Addis Ababa is going to be built by taking huge land from the surroundingOromia. They said similar encroachment is underway in Diredawa, Melka Jeldu, Ambo, Bishoftu and other Oromia areas.
Their fear is Oromia surface area is shrinking on its way denying them to build viable Oromo Republic. If the protest was in support of  the farmers in the surrounding area why have we not seen such protest organized by students when foreign land buyers took huge amount of land by dislocating farmers. This protest was not about the farmers.
As one person truly put it on the discussion on the master plan it is about Identity. Oromo Land is only for Oromos. The students at Ambo University could have brought  other students if their demand was about the farmers. Who said that all the farmers surrounding Addis Ababa are only Oromos. How comes we did not hear this voice when Amhara farmers were kicked out recently from Ambo area ??
For Ambo University protesters Addis Ababa is Finfine but they know very well that the residents of Addis Ababa are comprising Ethiopians from all ethnic groups. Was a referendum on the name ???
Addis Ababa is a city that has grown from 137.63 square km in 1991 to 527.06 square km in 2014 according the data released covering the protest. The population of  Metro Addis  Ababa is estimated 4.5 million according to recent census. Addis Ababa will not build fence to stop the flow of people who are coming to start life there. The Addis Ababa I was born and grew up has expanded in all directions without any plan in the last two decades.
The Addis Master Plan is a plan modeled after Chinese development plan to accommodate  the expansion of the city whose population has quadrupled in the last two decades. The “Development Government” can do whatever it wants. Public input is zero. It is given from top down and has to be implemented whether any one likes it or not.
The students protest should challenge the  planning process executed without consulting the people. If the protest is about “identity” or keeping once Kilil from ” foreigners ” it is not going to get huge support. Oromo Kilil like the rest ofKilils was not designed by consulting people. It was a political “map” of  divide and rule.
Kilil Identity is a time bomb and it is up to all of us diffusing this bomb. The interest of Ethiopia and Ethiopians should come first before Kilil Identity and interest. We need to build a “Renaissance Generation” on the foot step of “Land to the Tiller” patriotic Ethiopian generation of our student day, The  Golden Generation !!!!

  1. Your generation fought for entrenching ethnic identity in Ethiopian politics. You implanted the seeds of Ethiopia’s destruction. The radical left-wing immature youth at the time was hungry for power, had little understanding of practical challenges in politics, but too arrogant. Shame on that generation of Ethiopia. What is your legacy — except bloodshed, poverty and ethnic hatred? You better shut up!

    • The writer of this article seems to jump the gun for no benefit. You can not tell a farmer to till his land when he is due to harvest, first you harvest and the plough the land when the season comes.
Similarly, you do not talk about issues that fall under tribal quetions before you address the broader tribal questions that are begging for answers. Once that is done the point this man raises will be self-solved. Above all I see myself as leading the issues the writer raises.
For God’s let’s not turn blind eyes to facts that hold the key to our solutions and future good. Face it bravely and tackle issues of reform first and then talk of any body and any place as Ethiopian and Ethiopia. Anything less serves to prolong our suffering and then we would be surprised to see ourself going for it finally.
It is wisdom to go early enough where where you will have to go finally or forget about the country you love and cry for. The choice ours!!!!

  2. @Tedla,
It is not clear if you really know what you wrote in this “article”. The slogans of those students at Ambo University and other Universities in Oromia in the last two weeks are not different from the slogans of the university students of 1960s. What is the substantial difference between the slogans of students of 2014 and slogans of your comrades of 1970s? I don’t think there is a difference between the two. Is there a disagreement between “Land for Tiller” slogan of 1960/70 and the Oromo students’ quest for ending of expropriating land from the appropriate users? The people on the land surrounding Finfinee/Addis are truly tillers and harvesting their produces. Who has the right to take away their farmland in the name of “development” ?
Statistically the lion share of the land taken away from Oromo farmers in the surrounding areas of Addis Ababa in the last 23 years were given to people who came form Amhara and Tegrai regions. Oromos form the same Woredas even had no chance to get a plot to build their residential home in the area.
Good examples are the Lagaa Xafo area and the CMC areas where the farmers are forcefully driven away from their farmland. I know the Lagaa Xafo area development. Several dozens of familis were uprooted from their livelihood farmland by giving them less than $20,000 Birr for their farmland. But farmland taken away from each farmer is planned for the construction of at least 50 family homes of 4 -7 million dollar each. A surprise in this case is that 99% of those multi-million homes are owned by the strangers to the area. None of the f original families on the land had a chance to have home in those areas. Sadly these uprooted people from the land were forced to be daily laborers in the construction of those multi-Million dollar houses living in temporary shelters in the peripheral area of the multimillion homes’ compound. What would be the fate of these farmers when the construction of those houses is completed? What will wait for them after the area is completely developed and occupied by the millionaires from unknown place? I am sure they will be forced to move further away from their generational land to live in another slum area on waste disposal. The new occupants will enjoy their compound with a beautiful golf course.
I am sure you know deep in yourself this is injustice. But for you and your-likes, it is okay if those who are uprooted form their land are Oromos. Fortunately those students of 2014 at the mentioned university/universities are opposing the planned action of the “government’ to avoid the continuation of this injustice which is based on the identity of the people living on the land.
I am also sure that if the people around Addis in the surrounding Woredas were Amharas, your stand on the exact the same issue would be opposite to what you tried to write in your paper. You would shout out loudly and call for a demonstration at the Addis Ababa City hall. But in your subconscious you clearly enjoy this unjustifiable uprooting of Oromo people from their land and your paper is the reflection of this secret. There is a grand plan behind the interest of driving out the Oromo peasants from their farmland around Addis by Amhara elites and Tigrai Wayanes. Hopefully that will not work and this type of hidden agenda will widen the scar and widen the gap between the Oromo nation and the northerners.

    • @Hunde,
Students were also claiming that you are not Ethiopians they are Oromos. What is your thought about this. According to them they need to leave from Ethiopia.

      • well they can leave from Ethiopia and go back to where ever they come from, Madegaskar or Kenya!!
Ethiopia has servived the last 3000 years and will continu with or without u !!!!

  3. Shame on these oromo students, they don’t have national Ethiopiawi vision because they are brainwashed by OLF.

    • That is true, Oromo people at large have Oromia vision. OLF is the way for that vision. OPDO itself have recognized the only solution is to rule ourselves not servitude.

  4. John Cleese, a British Comedian, has an excellent expression for a person like Tedla Asfaw – incompetent articulator! Clearly, you have a rather shallow understanding of the implications of the ongoing explosive and enforced growth of Addis Ababa. You do not care to take a few minutes and think to gain a little bit understanding on the depth of issues you are commenting on. But your shallow understanding of issues does never stand in your way, you just go on and on regardless. You dare to ask such silly questions as who said farmers around Addis Ababa are only Oromos? It is really amazing that you ask such a question. Well, if your understanding of simple facts such as demography and geography is so much shallow and this much confused, then it is easy to imagine the extent of distortions in the rest of other more subtle conceptual and abstract political issues you are trying to “articulate”. In fact it is a waste of time and energy even to comment on things you write, and hence I stop here.

    • Oo…you rather know nothing but confused on the current demography on periaddis Ababa. Don’t negate since you are just Oromo. You have been applauding that A.A is Finfinie or vise versa .We have never heard of you opposing displacement of other Ethiopian farmer at different parts of Ethiopia .To judge one as if he/she couldn’t have in depth analysis on seemingly complex issues, you better improve your limited KAP .

  5. at observe
we better take and discuss on the important point raised in the article. The author what so ever his generation was, is, has raised practical points that we the generation of the day has to engage and discuss. This is serious. Honest God, i also for the first time ashamed of my own generation to hear the slogan from university students—oromo land for oromos—-what does that mean? what is the difference between these students, some of them are my own families, and Juwar. Are we buying his idea—ethiopia out of oromia? do we think this is the struggle our people want us to struggle? Is this not a shame to go out and make such foolish slogan (legetafo nt for sale?) when the basic question is about the master plane of our own CITY? or are we oromo students still think Finfine is already gone? how we deny land and development of our own capital or we donot believe in that???! is this not even a bigger shame on us than the 60s generation?
    Dear my friend observe
you said the 60s generation planed seed of hate—but are we the current generation shouldn’t fix it? who is going to fix it or shall we keep seeding hate such as oromo only for oromos? where is the difference now? are we used to blame amahars elites for their (temiketegninet), and now we are becoming selfish . Is it ourself who open for others to call us TEBAB?!
Please let us think as human, and as generation of the time. Legetafo is our land, indeed, finfine is our land too. If we advance finfine it is we the people of ethiopia to be benefited, and if we develope legetafo it is we people of ethiopia to be benefited. Otherwise tell us your idea clear—i mean if you think oromia is not part of ethiopia? i mean that is something different, but as far as we believe oromia is part of ethiopia, then i never expect such demonestration. as it was said, we better based our arguments on facts, strategies, hypothesis—-for instance displacing farmers from their route for any reasons could deserve demonestration. Otherwise—please please let us not just rush out and open our mouth for something—?

    • Is known that any Habasha groups are the same when it comes to Oromo and Oromia issue . Evicting Oromo and dismembering Oromia is fine for them. When illegal settlers told to leave it is denying citizenship rights. You are very suprising in deed. If Oromia is not for Oromos then for whom? For Amhara or Tigre? Ato Tedla may be upset since the slogan was in Afaan Oromo than Amharic as it was in 11970`s. What the woyannee are doing is not different what the others did to their subjects. as others did not get chance to inherit their children, the woyyane children’s have no chance to enjoy what their parents furnished for them. future will tell who reside in building built on grabed land.

    • @ duresa,
Are you really a person with a proper name Durersa or duresa the adjective ? I am sure you are the second one and you want to be more duresa with the nhelp of the TPLF junta on popwer at the loss of those Oromo and other small scale farmers. Fuyan kettin aba’uu ini atti akekateef kuni!!

  6. Duresa!
Are you more concerned about the issues or about what your friends from other ethnic groups are going to say? In short their validation. If the plan is about growth, this growth can happen without bringing these places under Addis. These businesses can get in to business agreement with Oromia administration pay their taxes, and function by the rules and laws of the area. The issue changes when there are other reasons for this. The first issue is just greed. There are people out there who don’t care who get hurt as long as they make money.
Displacement of Oromos is nothing new. Each time it got bigger and bigger and now it is to the point where it is threatening the existence of viable Oromia even within Ethiopia. Now, if one has a problem with the concept Oromia, then they are not friends of Oromo, they are simply part of the old system who hate anything and everything that is Oromo. And the Oromos not all the noises that are being made are not meant to support, but the expression of fear that the EXISTENCE OF VIABLE OF OROMIA IS A THREAT TO THE COUNTRY AND THEREFORE IT HAS TO GO. We know them more than they know us.

  7. As Tedla pointed it rightly, it is rubbish to claim Oromo land for Oromo. Is that is the position of Oromos? I think, except the lunatics, this is not supported by Oromos.
The issue is about fair governance. The issue is let the people be land owners. If they are land owners, they will decided who to sell it to and by what price. Whether Addis Ababa widens as far as Nazret or not is not a problem. Owners of the land will sell their land with good price and do business or keep their land whichever works for them. The Ethiopian law during the monarchy was clear. You can only evict a land owner if you build public services like road, school, government offices, etc. The law requires compensation to be above market price and immediate land allocation to the evicted person in a similar location where the land has value.
I thinks these are the principles we should rally behind.
@Duresa: The Amhars are not bothered about land. They have enough to look after themselves. So Talk to the TPLF to give you your freedom and form your own republic. When the TPLF came in in 1991, they decided that Addis Ababa will not go beyond 15 Km radius even if the Derg put the limit of Addis Ababa to 80 km radius. That was to please OLF. Now, no Amara told TPLF to widen Addis Ababa. They did it mostly for their own interest. But if the city has to develop, that is the way to do it, and do it without compromising the individual right, not the right of Oromia as such.
Duresa, note that plenty of Ethiopians from the South have made Addis Ababa their home. So you are fighting with Hailemariam too.

  8. This is a rubbish piece that does not deserve any reply. It is full of hollow mumbo jumbo and devoid of any substance. It is hard to comment on the substance where there is no any substance to begin with. The guy just jumps on the keyboard without having a clue what he wants to write about. Even at that, he cannot write a single sentence in English correctly after living in the U.S. for more than four decades.

  9. Addis and the surrounding areas were snatched from the rightful Shewa owners and given to Welega and Arisi Galas by Weyane. Now all jerk and dirt from these regions have started claiming Shewa as his/her own. A day will come when Addis will return to the Addis Ababans and when people who were born in cities like Addis, Debre Zeit, Nazareth and Jimma decide their own destiny be their own. It suck when we see Gidada from Welega and Muktar from Arisi wants to decide the fate of these people just because a few farmers here and their speak Oromgna. What does the Galas from Welega and the Mencha wielding Muslims from Arisi have in common from Oromos in Shewa. My parents are Oromos living in Sebeta but we were more happy to live with the larger Sebetan people than the new comers from Arsisi or Welega. These few Galas are now brainwashing the youth for their own purposes. So, they must be told a spade is a spade and should be sent back to where they belong.
    Thanks,

    • As everybody knows, the land policy in Ethiopia is that it does not belong to anybody but to the Ethiopian state. Who rules the Ethiopian state? -the Tigryan regime rules it. In effect, they have made sure that all the land belongs to them and they have ascertained this legally. They have created this legal pretext to evict anybody they want.
Their focus has mainly been the Oromo farmers. Under the guise of development, they have displaced thousands of Oromo farmers without any compensation forcing them to become beggars or laborers on their own ancestral land.
The Tigryan led minority regime disguised behind multi ethnic puppet representatives will continue this trend until they change the whole demographic situation of Ethiopia, mainly of the Oromos.
The current Oromo generation and all who stand for peace, justice and democracy in Ethiopia should fight this trend and put a stop to this. An injustice to one is injustice to all. This call includes the peace loving people of Tigray who have been duped by this regime.
If this continues, it will reach a stage where it would be irreversible and would remain a shame and a wound on the history of the Oromo people-and this is a strategic goal of the Tigryan regime from the very beginning.
What everybody has to understand is that this is part of the regime’s grand strategic scheme to change the demography of Ethiopia when it comes to the Oromo people. In fact, they have also annexed huge chunk of the Amhara land in Gondar and other places in their pursuit to form a greater Tigray.
How long will this shame continue? How long will this trick continue? How long will making the Oromos beggars on their ancestral land continue? What is life full of shame, slavery and dispossession in the 21st century?
The Tigryan regime disguised behind a prime minster from the South and an Oromo symbolic president would like the world to believe that they are purely doing well by pursuing development goals and who by any means speaks against what they do is against Ethiopia’s bright future.
Any kind of development that is not in the best interest of the indigenous people, any kind of development that goes ahead without respecting the people’s interest, any kind of development that is based on dispossessing the people of their land and their properties by force is bound to have a negative and destructive consequence in the end.
Unbalanced development dictated by the few with a far reaching strategic consequence to destroy a nation is bound to fail.
It is time to rise up and stop the shame and the denigration of a great nation. Life without freedom is meaningless!!

    • we want to keep our land clean because your relative curse our land with prostitution and leprosy.

      • To Summii Diina, You are so moron and dwindled at large who is unable to debate a sociopolitical issue at any rate for immaturity and retarded mentality. Leprosy is a communicable disease like TB and prostitution is larger in scale in Oromia (Nazret,Jimma,A.Minche, D.Zeit, …) but still all are not associated with ethnicity but Geopolitics and socioeconomic reasons. As a counter attack, one should never reply to your saying by mentioning “the current Trachoma, Elephantiasis, …belongs to you. ” Grow up!

  10. As everybody knows, the land policy in Ethiopia is that it does not belong to anybody but to the Ethiopian state. Who rules the Ethiopian state? -the Tigryan regime rules it. 11. There is another vision too as Galawu put is correctly. Who gives ownership to somebody that lives in Dembidolo or Jimma to claims Addis Ababa and its environs when the Shewans, the rightful owners, are sitting there. How come Muktar, who has never seen Addis Ababa in his entire life ,before he became an OPDO member, be the claimant of Addis environs when I lived there throughout my life?

  12. Here is what my intake on the issue of finfina’s expansion. I am an Oromo
,who is born and grow near FinFina. These people, who are shoting about
this master plan, are those who have been call us that we aren’t Oromos.
they use to refer as ‘uncle Sam’ and OPDO officals have been selling our
land and get rich for the last 23 years. What they are crying about is to
get the money as usual.we have been marginalized for over 23 years, we
need to get back our region called Shewa. When the Federal Gov want to
get the land we suddenly became Oromo what a jok.Let everyone get to his
kebele. we the Shewa Oromo has a different question.
Let the farmers of Shewa Oromos get an assurance to keep the farms and the
city help those farms to grow vegetables and the likes to feed the city.
Let the city build health insitutes for the farmers.
Let the city build electricy for those farmers.
As we don’t want to be ruled by the Gojjamas we don’t want to be ruled by the
wollegas.for there is no difference between them. Shewa belongs to Shewa.
If TPLF couldn’t give us our Shewa we will get it back soon or letter. we
are tired of being ruled by those people who don’t like us, by leveling us
‘uncle sam’. we have build Ethiopia like the rest of ethnic groups. We can’t
be bullied for our ancestries great work to keep this Ethiopia of ours.

  13. My question to all Ethiopian in general and Oromo University students in particular is where were you when the EPRDF/OPDO has given away hundred of thousands of hector to foreigners and party loyalists without consulting the locals and evicting indigenous people without any compensation in Oromo regional state for the past 10 years? Why did you silent when Oromo farmers? Go to YouTube and write the following in search box ”Land Grabbing in Oromia, New Documentary Video”

  14. it’s amazing no change has come on the mindset of oromo students since then. you are screwed by woyane. you are unable to see out of the box. c’mon guys even the world itself has changed and narrowed than ever before. throw the identity woyane gives you and sing for unity.

  15. To begin with Addis Abeba and Shewa are not the land of OROMO, Oromos controlled the present day Shewa after killing and displacing and committing Genocide on Amharas, Hadya,GURAGES and the entire population of DAMOT, ENARYA etc who used to live in the present day of OROMIYA
There are Historical evidences written even by foreign Historians such as Herbland and Ofcourse an eyewitness who saw the cruellity and the barbaric in someway animalistic behaviours and acts of the forefathers of these students on the people who inhabited the land we call today OROMIYA
No amount of lie by OLF cadres and so called OLF hate historians will change the fact of being OROMOS invaders who controlled Ethiopian provinces such as WOLLEGA(the land of ENARYA) Bale(the land of the kingdom of Sidama) ARSI(the land of the kings of HADYA) Jimma( the land of GAFAT and DAMOT) people and there are also DNA evidences which shows OROMOS are not the original inhabitants of the land they live today
What is worse is that OLFites are crying and playing blame Game for GENOCIDE while they know the truth about the true GENOCIDE their forefathers committed on the people of especially ENARYA DAMOT GAFAT and DAWRO people,
If OLFites are not willing in peace with the rest of Ethiopians in peace and start claiming the land, SHEWA belongs to non other than AMHARAS and GURAGES
AMHARA people and GURAGES has a right to claim their ancessteral land taken by Oromos 400 years ago like the ISRAELITES did after 2000 years
It does not matter weather the OLFites accept this or not what matters is the belief of the original inhabitants of the land which are Amharas and GURAGES and
It has been proven OLFites are coward but cruel like an animal who have no gut to fight and their 50 years of struggle who failed to liberate a single mountain tells it all of ourse OLF cadres are the best lists and hate instigators in the world and they are successful in only one thing that is their preaching of Hate and fabrication of hate propaganda and History prepares their followers for the second round of Genocide on Amharas and other people, however this time they will loose as more and more Ethiopians are becoming fade up with their rhetoric and hate propaganda which will only take the country in to chaos and destruction not the Free OROMIYA
We Amharas are tired of being punch bag of OLFites and the likes of Jawar Mohammed we are fade up of the brutal killings, displacement and name callings and the hate campaigns which were the hallamarks of OLFites and now you forced us to broke our silence and call a Spade Spade you are invaders and criminals committed Genocide who have killed millions of Ethiopians and crying victim will not change the fact and has no use at all
Thanks for WOYANE they have shown us it is possible to surrender 40 000 OLF HUTU militias in one day who are only brave at killing unarmed civilians, children, women as they did it in Arba Gogu, Bedeno, Asossa and WOLLEGA using a traditional and Cultural Galla killing style by cutting Breast, PENNIS, Head and other organs

    • Well said. We also have to see the other side of the coin.
Oromos want their land, perfect! First, they give back what they invaded and go back to the land they left back in the 16th C. If they prefer to stay in the lands they invaded, in peace, with other ethnic groups they are welcome, not everyone is like them, no one will chase them out, to where anyway, Kenya or Somalia? Better the so called Oromos make peace and live with the others, as they have been doing for the last four centuries. Addis will remain a cosmopolitan city.
Anyway, The government has been evicting people in all parts of the country, selling their land to foreign inverters. Almost all important international news agencies and papers have said a lot on the issue. What makes the new master plan different? Relatively, the dimention of this Finfine surrounding eviction is minimal compared to the others. Poor farmers of all regions have been affected for decades now. However, It is annoying to witness the so called leaders in Minnesota are using the poor farmers for their hate agenda and making money. I don’t even think they have the minimum idea how farmers live in the country, lets start with water (hard to say clean drinking) with 10 liters of water per day?

  16. I , myself , I condemn the existence of ethnic federalism all in all. It is wrong to divide the land to about 9 major tribes. Ethiopia has 95 tribes. If Ethiopia has to be divided into tribal tracts, then it must have been divided into 95 tribes. But now TPLF divided the country into few major tribes and now we brand new Oromo chauvinists in University. We have been chewing Amhara as Nephetegnea or Tmkhtegnea, or chauvinist. But as time has proven the Amhara theory is better than the new brand new Oromia theory. No Amhara elites or Amhara Nephetengneas or Chauvinists were eve seen claiming Amhara land or chasing or discriminating other Ethiopians. But we have now brand new Oromo Nephetengneas who dared to dared to tell us our country is not our country is not our country. This will not benefit even Oromos themselves. This will only lead to war to be honest. The Federal government owns the land and can what it deems necessary as long it does compensate the people. Addis can not be held hostage by brand new nephetengneas. If it is about compensation for those who own the land, then why does it has to be about Oromo students only? This will not benefit anyone but polarize the country into tribalism. I am not liking this tribalism. I did not see Ethiopian University students protesting when Amharas were single out from everywhere and thrown on the streets in their country. Warersa claims now Ethiopia is being occupied by stranger? He says the amhara and Tigreans are strangers? This is foolish and stupid to be honest. No Ethiopian is stranger within Ethiopia.
My argument, just void the ethnic federalism and revert to the old provincial system and apply the federalism as it is to the old provincial system. There is no need for ethnic land in Ethiopia. Ethiopia belongs to all Ethiopia. There is no land called Oromo land or amhara land, … this is the invention of TPLF. And this will benefit any tribe or ethnic. We have already seen thousands of Amhara discriminate across the country. We can not take this anymore to be honest. This will never benefit any Ethiopian. We do not need the ethnic federalism. If the government is can see, the early warning are there. This is a dangerous scheme of TPLF. it will not benefit anyone. I wanted to go back to my country Ethiopia. I do not want live in Oromo or Amhara land. I wanted to live in Ethiopia. No has right to limit where I must live. It is my choice in which corner of Ethiopia to live. When I says this I am not against Oromo, but I strongly believe that this ethnic federalism will bring more problem than solution. We can see the problem people using this for their narrow agenda. It is shameful University students aligned on the basis of tribalism. I do not think even the education is right because a student in higher education must not think in this narrow way. Education is supposed to enlighten us , education is not supposed to take us back to primitive communal society. In my opinion, the EPRDF government need to void the ethnic federalism and revert to the old system and apply the federalism to each province. This must be very easy to deal with and even for administration. Then we will not have tribal enclaves and people expelled in their own country. You all must ashamed the way you think. You live in the 21 century but the way you think is the stone age. Enough is enough. Ethiopia belongs to the 95 tribes or ethnics in Ethiopia. It does not belong to few major tribes. The EPRDF government has many colossal bad policies. And ethnic federalism is one of them. I live in Canada and we have a federal system and I grew up in Ethiopia but I live in Canada and I can do whatever I want anywhere in Canada if the money and I follow the rules of the federal states and federal government. But I can not work or live out the law. Ethnic federalism in Ethiopia must be made void in Ethiopia. Such system will not benefit any Ethiopia. I wanted to live anywhere in my country and there must be law. There is no law in Ethiopia because tribal kings can expel and violates other people rights. If I live in Ontario, the primier of Ontario has no right to uproot me and to tell me to go to Alberta or Nova Scotia. No one has a right to expel me from my country. We have seen enough madness. The regime has to come to its sense and stop ; subjecting our people artificial apartheid. We do not need any Amhara or any Ethiopian to be discriminate after now. If Addis Ababa is to be extended. Then the government must apply the law and compensate and give alternative land to the people who get displaced for whatever reasons. Oromo or Amhara game must stop now. We must not take this Oromo or amhara or tigre politics. No Tribalism please. If the Oromo farmers treated badly and displaced without compensation? then this issue should be a national or all students or all politicians, not tribal or oromo issue. Please open your mind and live in the 21 century.

  17. Werersa,
Your comments are good and acceptable. Here is my take. It is difficult to contain Addis Ababa where it is now. It is the capital of Ethiopia and Africa. It should grow. But let us agree on one principle: No person should be evicted from his/her land for investors. Investors should buy if they need my land and if I am willing to sell. During feudal Ethiopia, the law was no one will lose land unless it is for school, road or government offices. When this happens, people will get compensation above market price plus will get land in a similar location. If these things are respected I think it is fair. But TPLF now evicts you because Alamudin or Shemsedin or Hagos wants your land. We oppose this. No one is more Ethiopian than me.

  18. I am a university student here in the State myself and i am Oromo. BEFORE even reading 1 full paragraph i knew it was written by who’s mind is embedded by ideology of founders of Ethiopia which equates antiOromo. I will try my best to be rational and honest as much as i could. From what i know about the issue, this article and above comments; this is my thoughts. I am oppose to the master plan for many reasons:
TPLF does not give a damn about the surrounding area poor Oromos and other tribes for that matter. Addis is growing fast alone widening the gap between poor and the rich. Today’s Addis sky scrappers are owned by few TPLF mainly Tigray New riches and expanding it would not benefit the poor who is going to loose everything. The Master plan is the master plan of Woyane to double the land size so they can expand and build sky scrappers by grabbing the land from Mainly poor uneducated poor Oromo farmers and I don’t see why few or many non Oromos are against the movement because its not going benefit the poor unless you guys represent the old hate anti-Oromo state. Its funny when i hear this so called proud Habeshas/Ethiopias talk as if they know better for Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a prison hole for many Oromos. A place where my fellow Oromo students crowed the prison cells for a “Basic Human Right” questions. 90% Ethiopia’s prison cells are occupied by Oromo students and activist and I have not seen one Habesha talking about it as problem instead making it an oportunity show thier hate like thier fathers. And that is the main problem Oromo can never trust these inhumane people to work with or live with. Many you grew up in Oromia but still today the number one haters are you guys and that what we get for feeding you. I have so my questions to those proud ETHIOPIANS: where is the solidarity? How come you never felt my pain? how come every Oromo’s tears, blood and peacefull protest is an opportunity for you to call me names and show your true colors? IF Ethiopia is where we feel betrayed by OUR OWN Country, let alone the country If people who are proud to be Ethiopians aside with the regime because the human right question is coming from Oromo; What makes Oromo people Ethiopian THEN? Why would i wanna be Ethioipian? If Ethiopia represent disrespect for the majority, prison, mocking, insalt, torture and mass killing since Ethiopia was ever born. I must coward to upheld the idea of Ethiopia where anything that has to do with Oromo right is Wrong. Oromonet gives us more confort than Ethiopia because we see the true colors of everyone when it comes Oromo questions. How can my consciousness accept if ignore the inhuman Ethiopian actions and words till this day and try to act like I am Proud of Hell Ethiopia and its founders and founders followers. ONE Ethiopia but without any Oromo traits isn’t going to happen. What Ethiopia represent for you is not the same for many suppressed nations in Ethiopia. YOU lived in this small fake Ethiopia for song long you dont even reliaze how you dont even know about your country for so long. Sometime I even woder if i come from the same country as these anti Oromo people. They think the Ethiopia they knew in Addis is the same elsewhere. I was never had contact with OLF but the every day life i lived is good enough to make me who i am today. I see so many people blaming it on OLF. OLF was never present in Oromia; If they were really present then Ethioipia would be different today. Oromo people do not need to listen to OLF, we are OLF already because of what we go through in the name Ethiopia. Ethiopia would be better off with OLF because there is no reason for Oromo people to suppress others since we are majority. Only minorities dictate because dictatorship is the only way to stay in power for minorities unless tribalism dont matter anymore. And Oromo people know more than any Ethiopian tribes what it means to be suppressed. Dont get me wrong I would like to see a different Ethiopia that represent all of us equally where democracy crosses boundary lines, tribes and other things that matter in politics. But we are far from that and I believe the solution for that country can only come from Oromo to get us to the point where where you come from and what tribe you belong to doesn’t matter anymore. I wish to see that day but its not even close because Ethiopia is still full of people with ideology of its founders. Please let your gourds down and try feeling what it means to be Ethiopian as Oromo and then we may start to have dialogue about the fate of Ethiopian when you feel my pains as yours unless Oromo issues doesn’t concern you. From my observation these days Oromo’s can only work with southerns; they can only understand Oromo. The north seem to not even acknowledge our existence in that country.
