Address to the Oromo Intellectuals’ Misrepresentation, Fabrication of, and Attack on, Ethiopian History.

On July 28, 2019, a group of 54 people, claiming to represent “individuals and national/ethnic based nonprofit and community organizations representing our members”, published “An Open Letter to Ethiopians and to the International Community” on social media [See], sharply refuting a prior Communique made by “Concerned Ethiopians Across the Globe Urging Prevention of Genocide and Balkanization of Ethiopia” with 154 signatories, in a letter written on 19 July 2019, and addressed to the current Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, copied to various prominent leaders, political bodies, civic organizations, and media outlets, which published it on July 20, 2019 [see [“Communique Urging Prevention of Genocide and Balkanization of Ethiopia.”],

The 54 individuals dismiss the Concerned Ethiopians’ Communique and their interpretation of Ethiopian history as “extremely disingenuous, doom-laden and reflecting a one-sided political narrative that does not represent the view of the vast majority of the peoples of Ethiopia”. For them, Ethiopia, though masquerading as a nation-state, is a de facto colonial empire, created towards the end of the 19th century in cohort, and competition, with the European colonial powers, by Emperor Menilek II, a northern Ethiopian monarch who, aided by his northern army, not only conquered many southern nations and nationalities,  but also destroyed their governments, expropriated their lands and gave them to his men, mainly the Amhara and their agents, forcefully imposing, on hitherto independent and self-governing people with their own identities, cultures, and languages, those of the Amhara, under the pretense of homogenizing and assimilating all ethnic groups.

In this letter, I do not intend to deal with every aspect that Open Letter writers (which I call thereafter “The Group”] deal with. I leave those areas beyond my interest in the hands of the Concerned Ethiopians to address if they deem fit, limiting myself to only the historical points, which I consider are crucial, and need an immediate attention.

To start with, as a historian, I was dumbfounded at reading the pretentious historical narrative of The Group. I find the narrative as the most stupid, despicable, and embarrassing. I am sure nobody expects such gibberish could be written by any intelligent people let alone by those some of whom seem to have an impressive educational qualification, with PhD degrees to their credit.  It is with immense and profound sadness that among these, I notice the names of one or two individuals, who apparently appear to have a terminal degree in some sort of Ethiopian or African history and one of them, I would wish he is not the same person I have in mind, has written at least two monographs on Ethiopian history. Impressions and wishes aside, The Group do NOT seem to understand one iota of Ethiopian history and reality.

They do not have a clue beyond being arm-chair intellectuals or militant crypto-ethnicists. It is amazing these so-called learned individuals or professionals dare to accuse the Concerned Ethiopians of being disingenuous and one-sided in their interpretation of Ethiopian history, when the very narrative or interpretation they offer as representative of the correct perspective is nothing but their own exuberant, yet delusional, concoction of lies, fairy tales, makeups and distortions.

The problem starts with their very claim that they speak on behalf of “the vast majority of the peoples of Ethiopia”, and yet they provide no evidence or support to such a claim beyond, of course, their fanciful imagination. It is paradoxical to see that, while the Concerned Ethiopians, whom these intellectuals and professionals accuse of representing  only the view of the tiny minority of the country’s population, have 145 signatures to their credit, while the accusers themselves are actually able to muster in support of such an important letter a pittance, only 53 signatures. Yet they are blind to see the frivolousness, not to say the stupidity, of their claim that they represent the position of the “vast majority of the Ethiopians.”

I am not here to teach The Group Ethiopian history. Genuine students are life-time learners. But the mindset of The Group seems already programmed with a predisposition to see and understand Ethiopian history only in their own distorted historical lens. Thus, any attempt to offer them a different perspective would be of no use beyond wasting one’s time and energy. However, I would stress a few things especially for those innocent readers who may be willing to learn and educate themselves to spare themselves from being an easy prey for these groups’ sinister propaganda and agenda.

• It is indeed a fact that Ethiopia is the only country in the world to crush the indomitable arrogance of the White Man who, until then, roamed around the world, pontificating about his unquestionably inherent superiority and invincibility, and describing the Black people, including the present 53 signatories and the “very vast majority of the peoples of Ethiopia,” whom they claim to represent, as “monkeys,” and “baboons”. Not only Ethiopians are proud of this extraordinary military feat, which astounded the world, especially the Black people for whom Ethiopia became synonymous with black pride, power, and glory. Since then, Ethiopia has served as the rallying ground for the anti-colonialist and anti-racist movements everywhere in the world, most significantly in Africa and the African Diaspora. That is why Africans decided to make Ethiopia’s capital the seat of the continent, and the colors of its flag “pan-African colors.”

• Ethiopia was not an invention by Emperor Menelik II. It is the most ancient nation-state, whose civilization predates almost every modern nation- state in Africa, Europe and Asia. Emperor Menilek simply completed the process of re-unification that began long before him, with Emperors Tewodros II, TekleHaimanot, and Yohannes the IV. These rulers were well-aware that they failed to restore the entire Ethiopia’s historical domains, having lost considerable portion to the European colonial conquerors.  However, they did neither conquer nor acquire new lands beyond bringing together the two families, the north and the south, separated from each other for a short while due to the weakening of the central authority.

  • Each of these emperors was supported by admirably able and talented generals, such as Ras Alula from Tegray, Ras Dareso from Gojam, Ras Gobena from Shawa, and Ras Makonnen of Harar, known as the four cornerstones of the Resurgent Ethiopia.• Each of these rulers were of multi-ethnic background, so too were their leading generals as well as their armies.• Unlike most of the nations of the world, where the core group in the central government forcefully imposed its creed and culture by destroying that of the periphery, Ethiopia, throughout its history, has always been a multi-ethnic, and a multi-religious nation-state, with a variety of life-styles, ranging from the Oromo pastoralists to sedentary population, specializing in diverse professions.


᎐ Contrary to other civilizations, the central government in Ethiopia never attempted to impose its worldview, or one specific ethnic identity, or culture. That is the only reason why in one of the oldest nation-states in the world (Ethiopia), there are still even today so many languages, ethnic groups, religions, and professions, and the people are the most hybrid, and the most tolerant in the world until, unfortunately, these crypto-ethnicists showed up, surprisingly quite unexpectedly.

• That Emperor Menilek II expropriated lands during the re-unification process and gave them to the Amharas is a gigantic myth, perpetuated by those who are ignorant of Ethiopian social milieu. These ‘educated’ signatories are parroting and regurgitating this same myth for their own political agenda and for the delight of their western protectors and masters, the same people who call them “monkeys” and “baboons”, once they are away from their prying eyes, or, feel they are in a good company. To start with, Menilek’s army was multi-ethnic, the Oromo ethnic groups being its largest component, and its greatest beneficiary too, because they filled most of the administrative and military’s highest ranks. Both of Menilek’s policies, i. e. reunification and administration, have won deep admiration of the world’s renown writers, academics, statesmen, and the Europeans in his court, or those who accompanied him in his reunification campaign, and even his deadly enemies were no exception in admiring his leadership qualities.  Contrary to the malicious portray by these crypto-ethnicists, these world renown personalities describe Menilek II as personifying the epitome of wisdom, and foresightedness, and as an exemplary to any civilized world.

• Ethiopians spoke and learnt Amharic, not because they were of Amhara ethnic groups (a thing that exists only in the minds of these writers). Amharic has been Ethiopia’s national language since time immemorial and every European traveler, or visitor (since the Middle Ages), attests this basic fact, that Amharic was spoken throughout the Ethiopian nation-state. Though only an elementary knowledge is needed to establish this fact, these writers however, the highest level of their education notwithstanding, seem incapable to tell the difference between ethnicity and the lingua franca of a country. It had become the dominant language not because imposed by the Amhara ruling class (which in reality hardly existed except in the imagination of these confused and ill-bred, and ill-educated narrow ethno-nationalists), but because the Ethiopian people found it to be the best and the ideal. It may have some remote connection with the region anciently known as Amhara, an area known as a melting pot of many cultures and religions, a true embodiment of actual Ethiopia itself. Reliable studies suggest that no single ethnic group may own it, as it is a language developed largely as a result of pidginization and creolization out of several Ethiopian languages, and ethnic groups, in the style of Hausa, Swahili and the creole languages. It is indisputably rich, fluid, elastic, and sophisticated with no parallel in any Ethiopian languages and, in fact, most of the world’s languages. It is a language of Wax and Gold that one expects only from the Ethiopians, people endowed with pregnant wit and creative genius.

• The idea that people were forced to abandon their language and culture exists only in the fancy world of these writers’ imagination. If the Ethiopian government did not promote or encourage the study and learning of each ethnic group’s language, history or culture, it does not require great imagination to find out that the problem lies elsewhere: the country’s infant and struggling modern economy (with no potential to fund even the most basics), is responsible, and not politics. As someone born in the south, I would advise these writers to stop from patronizing the Southerners, by trying to be their spokespersons, or meddling in the affairs of, other Ethiopians. I am sure none of them want you to be their Moses. Just speak to your wretched self.

Instead of engaging themselves in worthy pursuits, as their education demands, The Group is engaged in committing rather an abhorrence which is indicative of the intellectual bankruptcy.Most of them live in the comfort of western capitals, promoting and glorifying savagery and primordial atavism, such as the Gada system, presenting to the naïve and unsuspecting westerners as an indigenous egalitarian democratic system, which in truth is a socio-political institution that is inherently criminal and terroristic with in-built genocidal features. We know from the history books, written by both locals and foreigners alike, that the Gada system is responsible for wiping out the whole gamut of civilizations from the face of Ethiopia by levelling to the ground cities, villages, and destroying cultures with its wanton and wholesale massacre of their innocent inhabitants, including children and pregnant women, cutting genitals, breasts and heads as trophies to feed and satisfy the exalted heroism of each successive Luba generation, which is naturally bent in outdoing its predecessor in savagery and barbaric cruelty.


Ethiopia and Menilek respected the time-honored cultures and languages of every ethnic group, whereas the Gada system obliterated them completely from the face of the earth, imposing, through mechanisms known as Gabar, Garba, Gudifacha or Mogasa, an Oromo identity, and reducing the entire population to a status that was not better, actually worse, than slavery. Idealizing this cruel and genocidal system as democratic is tantamount to glorifying Hitlerian Nazism or Southern USA Jim Crows as the highest manifestation of humankind’s political advancement. These intellectuals, instead of being ashamed of, or condemning it in the strongest term possible, or campaigning for a total banishment of what actually is a naked barbarism and anti-civilization, are actually and unashamedly trying to describe it in grandiose terms as being the sublime manifestation of Oromo society’s premature advancement in the art of governance.


The case of the less than 10 years old Keflo, a poor boy with divorced parents from Gurage area would be a picturesque illustration of the true nature of the inherent inhumanity of the Gada system in contrast to the ultimate compassionat nature of Mother Ethiopia. Keflo died in 1617, at the height of the so called “Galla Invasion”. While Keflo was tending his relatives’ cows in the field, “the Galla came from his back unexpectedly and pierced him with his sharp spear, and after cutting his penis for trophy while he was struggling with his life lying on the ground, the Galla left him believing that he was dead”. The little Keflo, however,  survived after a long battle with his life-threatening injury and, having eventually entered into the government service, he moved up through the rank until he held many important State offices, and reached one of the highest positions in the land, earning the title of Gojam Negash.  I encourage The Group to place themselves in the position of the little innocent Keflo who, while looking, in his tender years, after his relatives’ cattle, was stabbed by an unexpected blood thirsty stranger’s spear from behind, and then castrated, and left for dead. I am sure none of them like to be in this boy’s predicament, nor do they ever wish that to happen, if not to any human being, at least to any of their innocent children or their beloved ones. Keflo is a tip of an iceberg in the myriads of small children who lost their lives, dreams, and innocence in the hands of the bloody-thirsty Gada warriors, who are, in the minds of The Group, the paragons of the Oromo democracy, and who, according to Gojam Negash Keflo’s contemporary writer, “if they fail to kill someone do not grow guttu (hairdo), which is the mark of their killing; they rather live weeping in despair as someone who have been sentenced to death row.”[Dejach Tinno, early 16th century Oromo intellectual and courtier in the court of King Susenyos].


What This Group overlook is the fact that Menilek actually saved the South from two evils: the savagery of the civilized Europeans in the form of colonialism, and that of the primitive Oromo brutality in the form of Gada system. Both the South and the various Oromo clans owe Menilek and his timely intervention an immense gratitude: the  former, for being saved from the wholesale onslaught of their culture and devastation of their lands, massacre of their people by the marauding bloody-thirsty Gada warriors; the latter, for rescuing them from possible extinction due to the intense internecine wars among the various mutually hostile and cruel Oromo clans; and both, for keeping them away from falling into the brutal European hands, with their cultural identity, pride, and human dignity intact.


At the moment, Ethiopians seem to be facing the revival of the Gada order again, and the ethnic cleansing that has been going on in the Oromia zone for the last twenty-seven years, but most significantly in the last two, appears an indicative of the new Reign of Terror, which is the defining mark of the Gada system. This western educated Group has been quite deviously silent when thousands are, and still continue to be, uprooted from their ancestral homelands, and are massacred, and still millions have been denied their basic human rights in that region. Yet they still claim that they are educated. This is my take for them:

Human beings are member of a whole,

In creation of one essence and soul.

If one member is afflicted with pain,

Other members uneasy will remain.

If you have no sympathy for human pain,

The name of human you cannot retain.

(Poet Sa’adi, 1259)

Ethiopians are known the world over for respecting other people’s culture, and “they are naturally given to justice and equity… of excellent good nature, … endowed with pregnant wit and goodness of disposition, … not cruel, not bloody, they hardly quarrel.”

This is the character of the true Ethiopians, as described by the leading early European Ethiopianist, Ludolph Hiob. This is what The Group should aim for if they believe in their privileged education.


Menilek, unlike The Group, some of whom have attained the highest rank in their educational field, did not have any chance or luxury to attend even a modern elementary school, let alone a college. Yet he excels them by far in whatever aspects that makes one a true human being: understanding, compassion, magnanimity, intellect and foresightedness, not to say his most admirable and exemplary administrative qualities, leadership skills, diplomatic acumen, and national vision as a ruler of a proud and historical country. His lack of modern education notwithstanding, he has laid one of the strongest national foundation that kept the country from the prying eyes of colonialism. Indeed, it is upon all of us to build a better life for ourselves and our country, grateful that we had a land that is the envy of the world for its unique history, salubrious climate, fertile soil, immense economic potential, and an exceptional people.


Instead of blaming Menilek, and preaching hatred, dividing people in fictious primitive tribal identities, The Group should take its educational responsibility seriously and do something useful to the country and people, who educated all of us without taking sides, or asking whether you are from this or that ethnic group or religion. Life is too short, let us do something before we depart to the world of no return.


My final advice to these ‘educated’ individuals is that, instead of fabricating lies, distorting facts, and deluding the innocent public for your own pure political agenda, you should work for the full empowerment of every Ethiopian, immaterial of his/her ethnic origin, religion, or language, birth or background. That is what education is about. The enemies of Ethiopia are poverty, illiteracy, disease and ignorance, and NOT Menilek or your imagined or illusionary Amhara. Instead of wasting your time in fruitless and useless politicking, dividing people, you should instead invest your time in hard work with aim to alleviating our people’s misery and mortality rate. Whether you appreciate or not, the fact is that Menilek has laid down a strong foundation: he has given pride that has allowed each one of us, including yourself, to walk in every corner of the world with heads held high, with unsurmountable pride, irresistible glamour, and assertive self-confidence.
Fighting for, and based on, foreign ideology is good for one thing, and one thing alone: an assured mutual destruction and extermination. Let me leave you with an observation, which I consider to be quite educative, an observation left to us by a woman with no education but based on her gut-feeling. She told Emperor Susenyos, whose attempt to forcefully impose Catholicism by the royal fiat, has left the entire country asunder, a predicament similar to our own time:
Look not one of these men whose bones cover the earth is a foreigner; there is not one of us but has lost a brother or a son or someone bound to us by ties of blood. Whether we are vanquished or whether we vanquish, it is the same, we are the losers. “



  1. This is a well written article by the dear concerned countryman. There is a chunk of material in it. It is enjoyable to read.

    I wish though he did not lump a group of intellectuals who harbor differences in their individual choice of methodology. Almost all of them except for Obbo Jawar are grandchildren of those Oromos who willingly cooperated with the then Emperor and his Oromo commander of the army, Gobena. They were presented his plan and they accepted it without even a token resistance. They had the best opportunity to have told him ‘shove it’ because the British were right there who will be more than willing to provide them with any assistance they needed. And they were well aware of that. But they did not go that route. Kumsa said ‘yes sir’, Aba Jifar said ‘come and get it. In fact I will help you claim new vast territories west and south of Jimma. Come on in’. The British were out there just a stone throw away from Jimma and Neqemte. But when it comes to the Arsi and Itu Oromos it was a different story. They put up fierce resistance and these two were overwhelmed by sheer overwhelming numbers of the Emperor’s army which included tens of thousands Abichu, Falle and Walagaa Oromo fighters. They provided the same extremely productive service during his campaign in other parts of the south. Boy they were rewarded handsomely by him. In my small village all the policemen were Oromos from Shewa and their chief was from Walalgaa with tracts of the most fertile land. I thought he was an Amhara because his name sounded as such until he came to our house one day. He was so fluent in Oromifaa and I heard him telling my dad that he was from the Qelem area. And he and his policemen were the most hated in the area. With any slightest mistake no matter how innocent it was, you better have the greens in your pocket enough to butter their palms.

    It seems to me that their grandchildren are suffering from a bad spell of guilt conscience for what their grandfathers did, not showing an iota of courage. We should look back at where it all began. We all agree that Gobena was much more powerful than Menelik when the two met. Menelik was a simple prison escapee with no more than a few handful followers around him. Gobena could make a quick job with him. But he did not. He agreed to work with him. Why? Why such proven warrior with battle hardened horsemen fighters under his command chose to align himself with a lonely fugitive Richard Kimble? Why? Gobena might have gotten tired of the carnage and unruliness he saw around him. If someone here tries to tell me that Gobena was that easily bamboozled I take that as insult to him as an Oromo. He was all set as far as personal fiefdom and all the wealth that came with it. So why did he submit to a convict runaway when he did not have to? How about Kumsa, Jote and Aba Jifar? They were all ‘billionaires’ of their days with all that lucrative slave trade and bullions of gold in their treasury. I have my own conclusions about that but I would like to hear from historians of our own. I repeat, I don’t wanna hear this ‘they were hoodwinked or as some of these grandchildren would like to tell us that Gobena and others like him were just ‘career soldiers’ Don’t even try!!!

    I will be waiting patiently. But true to our legendary custom and civility, no insults or name calling are welcome or expected.

  2. It’s unnecessary to review Larebo’s gibberish scribble as historical fact, for this is nothing but a hate monger propaganda aimed at Oromo nation. This hate monger failed professionally for a good reason, for he has a very sick mind begging for professional help. Oromo is not worried because persons of twisted mind devalue our culture,language, and way of life. We have rebuilt the necessary organizations, intellectual prowess, scholarly societies and political map for free and prosperous Oromia. We also can easily identify the hatefulness of those burning with jealousy and envy. Make not mistake though, if such hate propaganda continue unabated, we will defend ourselves come hell or high water, and we know how.

  3. With the exception of these three people( from the poster you have) Dr. Merara,Lencho Leta, and Gen. kemal Gelchu it is not worth to address them as intellectuals. As it is said EBETEM YEwedal Til and so is every moartengia that I see there.This tiny but very noisy hooligans by the unified arm of the Ethiopian people need to be chased out of the country.

  4. The fall of the Arsi Empire marked a turning point in Abyssinia’s southern conquest. Although Menelik’s imperial army faced furious resistance at Cali Calanqo, in Eastern Oromia, by that time, a vast swath of the Oromo country was already annexed.

    The Aanolee memorial was constructed with a cost of 20 million birr, according to the Oromo Culture of remembering. The monument stands erect as a reminder of the tragedy about which, in the words of Gnamo, “Ethiopian history was largely silent.” Even today, some hateful Ethiopians, akin to holocaust deniers, claim the incident was a fiction. Aanolee stubbornly stands to remind Ethiopians , who refuse to deal with mounting Oromo grievances, that the Oromo issue remains an open wound, a latent volcano — with only the day and time of its eruption uncertain.

    The local Abbaa Gadaas, the highest-ranking Arsi officials, including those in line to take the reign of power, were castrated. Menelik’s soldiers cut the tongues of those who spoke out against Abyssinian invasion. They went door to door collecting cultural artifacts, including Boku, Caaccuu, waraana, wonte, Siinqee and other relics. In a bid meant to destroy and remove Oromo culture from the people’s psyche, the artifacts were torched. It burned for eight straight days, according to descendants of the survivors.

    Arsi oral historiography is replete with the story of the tragedy of the cold-blooded massacre at Aanolee. Told and retold by grandmothers and grandfathers for generations since, Aanolee served to this day as a symbol of Oromo resistance against Abyssinian expansion and its continuing legacy of subjugation. The Arsi saga of the 1880s gave birth to two stories — that of Aanolee and Lenjisoo Diigaa. According to Gnamo, Leenjiso was instrumental in organizing the Arsi resistance against Menelik’s invading army.

    Among the Arsi, mention the word Aanolee and the blood of the Arsi boils and its trauma curdles into a rock of determination to see to it that justice is restored. Talk about the bravery of Lenjisoo and the knowledge of the massacre of Aanolee becomes a clarion call for spirited action against injustice and the willingness to pay whatever cost is necessary to re-empower the Oromo and relive the glory of its past patriotism and bravery by liberating Finfinee from the settlers choke hold firm grip.

    Finfinee will be the final stamp to ensure where the Amara hegemony ended. All we patiently are waiting for is for the trees we planted to grow since we donot want to have the trees trampled upon by the settlers donkeys, the settlers will for sure not face us Oromos but will for sure will resort to move out carrying their trashes, the settlers always do run away when we face them, only less than a handful of us chased their “Heroes” (BALADERAS) out of their own gathering meetings time and time again . It is known we are capable to clean out Finfinnee in no time as we cleaned their beggars out of Finfinee in less than a week with not a single resistance directed at us from the settlers.

  5. For so long the field has been cleared for ethnic politicians to manufacture a concocted history in abundance with no one coming to fore to challenge them. Whenever their made-up history is challenged these ethnic goons respond not with the fact to assert the truthfulness of their story, but they call their mob to insult and intimidate those who questioned the stories thiese ethic politician made out of a thin air. It is heartening to see the kinds of Professor Haile M. Laredo, Taye Bogale, Fekere Tolosa, Achameleh is digging deep and bringing it out to light how history has been used to create division instead of unity. As they say the best disinfectant is a sunshine. Those who armed themselves with knowledge always will have the last say. A piled up hey of lie doesn’t have a chance to withstand a stick of truth.

  6. Larebo, you talk about intellectualism and professionalism? Have you forgotten that Clemson University kicked on your ass and expelled you because you were unable to teach? How on earth can you have a moral authority to criticize any learned individual when Clemson proved that you are not an intellectual at all?

    Thank you for this well documented history of Ethiopia as a nation as well as for your thoughtful analysis of events and social institutions of the country over the past few centuries. My only regret is that such insightful analysis by Prof. Haile and other respected historians was concealed from the public and a whole generation of Ethiopian youth was brought up being forced-fed with historical distortions and in many cases complete fabrication of events and institutions. Many of the commentaries above in response to the article illustrate how such historical concoctions poison the mind of the gullible by design to promote the hateful ideology of ethnicity and racism advanced by activists and politicians with nefarious and selfish motives . Hopefully such publications from bona fide Ethiopianist like Prof. Haile will go a long way to rectify all the historical distortions concocted over the past three decades.
    To paraphrase S.Hawkins, the greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge which in the case of Ethiopia is destructive bordering on catastrophic.

  9. The debteraist came again with his filthy writings on this platform. He is a graduate of the school of Debteralogy like Larebo, Mesfin Woldemariam and Getachew Haile did during their childhoods. The foundations of their knowledge is the so called KEBRA NEGAST. Therefore, they believe in illustration and cannot accept the realities. But it will take them nowhere. The reality of our country is beyond their comprehension.

    They write always a nonsense piece in order to defend the outdated and rotten systems and thinking. But it cannot help. It is just a waste of time. If they really want to solve the problems of the Empire state of Ethiopia seriously. First, they have to denounce all the bad deeds of all past and present repressive systems. Second, they have to make sure for themselves that the hegemony of the Habesha will not have place in Oromia and the southern henceforth. Calling the ghost of Minilik or crying for a fake unity in order to sustain their  previous privileges will not help any more.  We are in the 21st century. The real solution is mutual understanding and respect.

    Blaming everything they hear and see will not help them and will not help their nation. The dark time of the Minilik’s era will not come back again. The rotten and inhuman systems of the invaders of old neftengas will never reincarnate. The ghost of Minilik also will not defend the failed ambitions of his offspring.

    The main problem is their mentality and the culture in which they grew up. The mentality and the culture of the dark era of Minilik, Haile Selassie and Derg which are still influencing and confusing them. They need redemption. The Oromo Qubee generation can probably help them in the near future by teaching and heralding a true democracy in that country. But in the meantime it is better if they reconcile themselves with the reality of this time. No one can turn back the wheel of history.

    They can keep crying like a mad. Their cry and insulting will not bring back the inhuman eras of the rotten neftegnas Menliki (the Hitler of Africa), Haile Selassie and Mengistu. They have gone for good. Be sure it will not came back again. That of the TPLF era will follow soon.

    They used to say that their ancestors came from Israel. Even sometimes they claim that they are not Africans. But now this guy try to claim that they  are an indigenous of East Africa. They are like a ship without navigation devices. They have been suffering under double standard. 

    He try to undermine the power of the great nation of East Africa. The principles and the value of the great Oromo nation cannot fit your values of debterism. All your nonsense writings are an indication of your desperation and hopelessness. How poor you are!

    It doesn’t matter what they  claim and preach. No one will stop the aspirations of the Oromo nation for peace, dignity, freedom and prosperity. Enough is enough! They cannot turn back the wheel of history.


    The flag of those inhuman systems of their forefathers will be prohibited in the future Oromia and in the southern part of that country like the banners of Nazis and apartheid whether you believe it or not. Already it is underway. The Qubee generation don’t like even to touch it. The true multinational democratic Ethiopia will have its own flag and banner which will be decided democratically so that it will reflect the reality of that country.

    Religion was a key point of union between Minilik and Gobenaband other Oromo líderes of it’s time. One reading the story of saint Tekle Haymanot with caves in deep Showa in 12-13 centuries and documented as far as Egypt and Rome can take that as given truth. Even in our generation more than half of those Ethiopians that claim non to belong to Ethiopian Orthodox Church have their ancestors belonged to it. So ethnicity or language alone is not a facor here for alliance. Plus for Gobena and the other liders when Miniliks question of undue Oromo expansion in the previous hundred years after the Abisininan-Adal war was right to submit as redemption and reconciliation for both peoples and they were also probably tired of Promo inter clan brutalities. Nevertheless do not underestimate Minilik’s political power at the time not do think all the Oromo lifers were all powerful Welega was battle ground for Minilik backed by Gobana and Teklehaimanot of Gojam. I personally think for Gobena joining Minilik was a sort of redemption for common cause to restore people’s unity after the previous Promo expansion

    The fact that Minilik relied on his expansion of other ruleres apart from the imperial army makes it difficult to attribute any claimed attrocity just to Minilik in the first place. But also one have to question about the objectivity of those attrocities as a whole. There is not a single verifiable independent writing that those attrocities except the reference to oral tradition written again and again by modern political and pseudo historical writers. The only mention of what was found from a Russian military aid to Minilik aid which described campaign against Promos in general but not Arsi in particular. And thtabis the only general comment we find today for relatively recent history. Now if we go and analyze the writing by different authors about the ferocity of the Oromo clbas expansion specially the Arsi on regard s to violations of humans dignity including castrations are clear in there superposition hence Minilik’s griviances with it. Some authors even described gruesome realities of ‘warriors’ drinking xatle blood to get high and get out to kill for fun. Do not get me wrong Minilik or no other king is wait neither but repetating addnausimum non existent evidence while coating with sugar the evidence in your eyes is not productive to peoples and history understanding. Minilik himself could have switched to prisión terms instead of mass amputation of Askaris after Adwa Battle or give them a shoot of Grace after they were dying slowly after the event.   12. The feeble and shabby intellect of “Professor” Haile Larebo:

    I met the so-called scholar, Haile Larebo at 45th anniversary of African Studies Association that was held in Washington, DC on December 2-5 2002. He was with a panel group,2 white guys and some others of color. Haile was in his tempo, smile broadly and when his turn came to present his paper–he immediately launched an attack on the Oromo Nation, culture and history! Unapologetically, he starts throwing out the word: Galla” throughout his presentation! Even those Ferenjee colleagues of his were taken back by his usage of the G-word!

    Perhaps, he did not know there were several Oromo professors and independent scholars in the audience– we kept our cool until all the panel members concluded their presentation–and the floor was open to comments, questions, and responses of the panelists. we challenged him of his scholarship about Oromo history and culture with the decorum suited to scholarly temperament. Oromo Professors from the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois and one white American scholar from UCLA questioned his premises and evidence of what he presented-regarding the Oromo– to use his word “Galla” culture and history! Mr. Haile started sweating a bucket! Literary, his shirt, and tie became wet; he constantly was wiping his face with napkins that were on the panelist table! What precipitated that panic attack, I can only assume that his anti-Oromo falsehood was unmasked at the grand annual African Scholars conference.

    Immediately after the panel was over, he bolted from the hall-way, even though some of us wanted to have more discussion with him. It was unfortunate that he never had the backbone to stand his grounds challenge those who’ve posed legitimate and critical views of his shabby presentation.

    There was an AM radio program in Washington DC, hosted by a notorious anti-Oromo and anti-Tigray individual, I believe it was called “Ethiopia-went” Haile Larebo was the staple and indispensable guest every Sunday belittle Oromo history and culture and disparaging Tigray. We made a concerted campaign to shut down the program by exposing the hate speeches and anti-Oromo and Tigre comments of Haile and the program host individual! The company that owned the radio station came to its senses and dropped the program!

    Again, I believe it was 2016 annual African Studies Conference in Washington DC, at the Marriot-Wardman-in Adams Morgan, this time Haile was with several Ethiopian and American Scholars: His topic was how the Western writers distorted Ethiopian historiography! He had power-point presentation–drivel that no one can follow and some members of the panel were grimacing throughout his gibberish rendering.

    I am just pointing these out just to remind people how shabby and infantile his grasp of history and basic scholarship.

    You forgot the writer of the fiction book of የቡርቃው ዝምታ, tesfaye gebreab. His fiction book is the OLF standard text book – I am sure you were taught this book. Ato Asmerom Legesse and tesfaye gebreab were both sponsored by ሻዕብያ to write fabricated books to delude Oromo in a useless effort to manipulate the thousands of years of history of Ethiopia. It is a world wide documented fact, the historic settlement pattern and geography of Ethiopia was obliterated by Gragn and the Galla invasion of the 16th century. Professor Haile Larebo is presenting the unfiltered raw historical truth. It is wise to know your history than being diffident to accept the bitter truth. There has never been an Oromo or Galla country prior to the 16th centuray but they scattered and mingled other natives such as Guraghe, Kembata, Hadiya, Amhara, etc. Galla now called Oromo are the last immigrant to Ethiopa. No body is going to buy into the fabricated carp produced by either Ato Hizkel or Ararisa or the preaching of Jawar Ayatola.     Tesfaye Gebreab is a very talented writer and the novel, Yeboorqa Zimmtaa (Buraa’s Silence) is about the struggle of Oromo Agro-Pastoralist in South-Eastern Oromia against feudal Habasha settlers-colonialist known as Neftegnes. it is a great epic story written in the vein of great Russian novels of the 19th century. It depicts the social and political battle of peasant families against feudal settlers. very rich in language, it vividly portrays the daily grinds of Oromo peasant farmers. It is also a story of love, war, loss, timelessness and intensely personal contribution by Tesfaye Gebreab to the Oromo nation, where he was born from an Eritrean immigrant family.

    The Novel is styled after the Cossack novels by Mikhail Sholokhov–Quiet Flows the Don, The Don Flows Home to the Sea… It is about agro-pastoral civilization-of Southern Cosassk life.

    Tesfaye has said he was inspired by Mikhail Sholokhov’s novels and even the name Burqaa Zimmita–similar to the theme of the novel-Quite Flow’s the Don” the story of Cossak Farmers. Burqaa Zimmita is the story of Oromo Famers in South-Eastern Oromia.

    Below the surfaces of his novels and short stories, lies the rejection of habitual Habash deceptions and platitudes of the dominant Abyssinian culture in relation to the Oromo and other subject peoples of the Empire. The pathetic and tiresome doodle by Abere–to out Tesfay and Asmero Legesse as Shabia agent is unacceptable!

    Haile Larrebo is a mediocre demagogue, who hurled malignant invectives on the Oromo people and Nation.     Abere talks about the in-existence of Oromo Nation prior to the 16th century–most African polities were not nation-state till the late 19th century including the Abyssinia regions– they were just a collection of nationalities and small kingdoms, ruled over by a war-lord or a tyrant. in the Oromo Nation case, the Gadaa Democratic institutions were thee mainstay of governance.

    Abere does also accuses the Gada system as barbaric and anti-woman. let me remind you that male chauvinism is not limited to Oromo society! it is worst in the Habasha community where the woman is considered as property and whipped by their husbands! Even in the good old USA, the woman did not vote until the 1920s with the passage of the 20th amendment! Hence, the oppression of a woman has to be tackled in every corner of the globe, the Oromo/Gadaa Nation will do its part!

    The cruelty of Habasha Kings and Queens were immensely destructive to the Oromo Nation than the Gadaa system had ever!
